IGBO HEROES DAY

Today, 30th May, we remember the Igbo and other Eastern Nigerian Heroes who fell during the Nigerian Civil War, honoring the courage and sacrifice of those who endured one of our darkest historical periods. Their legacy teaches us the value of resilience, unity, and hope.

From those experiences, we have grown stronger, contributing meaningfully to our nation through entrepreneurship, education, and national development.

As insecurity ravages many parts of Nigeria today as a result of the same unresolved national issues that lead to the same civil war, we are reminded to choose unity in diversity over resentment and cooperation over suspicion. We work for a safer, united nation where all citizens can thrive together.

When the mind is burdened with too many worries, pressures, and unresolved concerns, even important things begin to slip away from attention. Constant mental strain affects focus, memory, and productivity. That is why a healthy environment matters β€” an environment that reduces unnecessary pressure, supports stability, and allows people to function at their best. Sometimes, improving productivity is not about working harder, but about reducing the weight the mind is forced to carry.

As a manager, this is why I do not address problems only from the surface. I believe in identifying the root cause of a problem rather than merely reacting to its symptoms. When someone under my management begins to lose focus or becomes less productive, my first response is not to shout, threaten, or penalize them. Instead, I try to understand what they are going through.

Especially when the person is skilled and valuable to the team, I believe the right approach is to step in early, have a private one-on-one conversation, and create an atmosphere where they can speak freely without fear of judgment or punishment. Many people do not initiate such conversations themselves because they fear criticism, misunderstanding, or penalties. But when leaders create room for honest dialogue, problems can often be resolved before they grow deeper.

Good leadership is not just about demanding performance; it is about understanding people well enough to help them perform at their best.
