Parts of a Centrifugal Pump

Impeller: Rotating component that adds kinetic energy to the fluid. Types: Open, semi-open, and closed.

Casing: Encloses the impeller and guides the flow of fluid. Converts kinetic energy into pressure energy.

Types: Volute and diffuser casing.

Shaft: Connects the impeller to the motor. Transmits mechanical energy for impeller rotation.

Shaft Sleeve: Cylindrical cover over the shaft. Protects the shaft from wear, corrosion, and leakage.

Bearings: Support the rotating shaft. Reduce friction and allow smooth rotation.

Mechanical Seal / Gland Packing: Prevent leakage of fluid along the shaft. Mechanical seals are commonly used for efficiency.

Why do pumping systems fail?

A Pressure Sand Filter (PSF) is a water treatment unit that removes suspended solids and turbidity from water.

Water enters the filter under pressure, passes through layers of graded sand (and sometimes gravel), and the sand traps particles like dirt, rust, and organic matter. The clean water then flows out from the bottom.

It’s commonly used as a pretreatment step before softeners, RO systems, or other filters. Periodic backwashing is done to clean the sand bed and maintain performance.
