The importance of Soil Testing before carrying out Construction Works cannot be overemphasized.

1. ITS BEARING CAPACITY: Soil testing gives an estimation of the bearing capacity of the soil, it requires holding and balancing the weight of the structure.

2. PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL COMPOSITIONS: You can measure the physical & chemical composition of the soil easily. This determines the presence of impurities inside the soil. This is important because the choice of construction material may also be affected by the chemical and mineral composition of the soil.

3. SETTLEMENT BEHAVIOUR : This is important to measure the soils stabilization, if the soil is weak; it will settle easily, erode and may claim lives.

4. WATER TABLE LEVEL : Water table level is one of the key problems of the foundation. Soil testing gives an insight into the water level of the soil. Through this, engineers determine the moisture, humidity, dampness and mineral components of the soil.

Here are causes of building collapse but not limited to these;

- Bearing Capacity of the Soil:
Every structure sits on the soil, the ability of the soil to hold a building is very important. There are some soft soils that cannot withstand the weight of a building, therefore if a building is placed on them, the soil might give in and the building might collapse.

- The foundation is the most important structure of a building. If a foundation is weak, it can cause a building to collapse. A solid foundation is required to carry a building as high as you want.

- Failure to Perform Strength Tests.
Strength tests should be conducted throughout a building’s construction. This includes load testing which helps assess how much weight a structure can safely support without causing cracks or other forms of damage.
