Building Science 101 ,how to prevent moisture pe*******on in the initial Superstructure Partition Walls by providing DPC (Damp Proof Course)for the Superstructure Partition Walls to act as a barrier between the oversite floor Slab and the Non-load bearing Partition Walls, after the Dpc for the interior walls ,you have to coat your external footing walls also with bituminous chemicals like Emitiko etc etc to make it effective and also add anti Sulphate Resistance cement or chemicals to your mortar plastering to prevent the salt properties in the ground water movement through capillary action from eating away the sandcrete blocks of the Structure and also peeling or fleaking of the paint rendering.

In road design, camber refers to the intentional, slight slope or curvature of the road surface. The purpose of camber is primarily to assist with water drainage, helping to prevent water accumulation on the road and improving traction and safety, especially in wet conditions.

Types of Road Camber

1. Simple Camber (Parabolic Camber)

The road surface has a gentle, continuous curve, highest at the center and gradually sloping down toward the edges.

This design allows water to drain off evenly to both sides.

Simple camber is common in two-lane roads and rural highways.

2. Composite Camber

A combination of straight and curved sections on the road surface, usually featuring a central flat section and sloped sections toward the edges.

This type is commonly used on wide roads or multi-lane highways to manage water flow without excessive slope.

3. Reverse Camber (Adverse Camber)

Here, the road slopes inward, with the edges higher than the center.

This design is rare and generally avoided because it can cause water pooling in the center, increasing the risk of hydroplaning and reducing safety.

4. Straight Camber (Crowned Camber)

The road has a straight, sloping section from the center to each edge, creating a peak in the center.

This type of camber is often seen in roads with lower traffic, where a simpler design is sufficient for water runoff.

Each type of camber is selected based on road design considerations like traffic volume, climate, and safety requirements to ensure effective water drainage and stability for vehicles.

The foundation depth of skyscrapers is a critical aspect of their structural design, as it determines the stability and safety of the building. The depth of the foundation for a skyscraper depends on various factors, including the height of the building, the type of soil and bedrock below the site, local building codes, and environmental conditions.

For tall buildings, especially skyscrapers, deeper foundations are usually required to ensure the structure can distribute the weight of the building safely to the ground. There are different types of foundations used for skyscrapers, including shallow foundations like spread footings or mat foundations, as well as deep foundations like piles or caissons.

In some cases, skyscrapers are built on sites with challenging soil conditions, such as soft clay or loose sand, which may necessitate even deeper foundations to reach more stable soil or bedrock layers. Engineers and architects work together to conduct thorough geotechnical investigations to determine the optimal foundation design for the specific site conditions.

The foundation depth of a skyscraper is a crucial consideration during the planning and construction phases to ensure the building's long-term stability and safety. Deep foundations are designed to transfer the loads from the building to the ground in a way that prevents settlement or excessive movement, thereby ensuring the structural integrity of the skyscraper.

WHAT IS A PARAPET:?

Recently I have been hearing some clients, artisans and Even some with an engineering title misplacing a concrete fascia with the name “PARAPET “

And I find it hard to correct them at the spot because I don’t want the person to feel bad.🤪🤪🤪

Now what is a PARAPET?

A parapet is typically the uppermost reaches of a wall that extends above the roof level and provides a degree of protection to roof, gutters, balconies and walkways of houses, churches, castles, apartment blocks, commercial and other buildings. It may be constructed from blocks ,bricks ,stone, concrete, timber or even glass.

What is the purpose of parapet in buildings

Parapets were originally used to defend buildings from military attack, but today they are primarily used as guard rails, to conceal roofs ,rooftop equipment, reduce wind loads on the roof, and to prevent the spread of fires.(it’s not just for aesthetics )

Indeed, the Bible instructs us to build a parapet around the roof of our home so that, "…you may not bring the guilt of bloodshed on your house if someone falls from it" (Deuteronomy 22:8). This commandment highlights the relatively simple and practical means by which we can prevent falls.

What is the maximum height of a parapet wall?

The maximum height of the parapet wall should be 5 feet. Above this height, a parapet wall will look ugly and will not serve it's purpose. The minimum thickness of the parapet wall is 5 inches. But the recommended thickness is 9 inches.

Lastly,a parapet always comes with coping, which can be casted on it,or precasted .

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF PARAPET WALL

Advantages.
1. it creates a Unique beautiful style. Its sophistication comes with visual strength.
2. Fire protection. A house with parapet roofs burns only one room(that if all the rooms are with parapet ). The wooden roof trusses are not linked so fire wont pass.
3. Wind break. Roof covering on buildings with parapet roofs are not easily blown away or affected by wind related structural challenges.
4. The house can be built in parts

Disadvantages(that’s why people run away from it in Nigeria)
1. Roof leaks. Where the parapet walls meet with the roof, if not done properly with either wall flashings, bitumen based waterproofing there is a risk of water leaks.
2. Cost. Parapet walls that project out of the roof are an extra cost which is not found on other roofs. These walls are supposed to be built with 9 inch thickness (double brick units / double leaf)
3. High level of expertise is required to bring out the house as designed.(this is actually not a disadvantage when you hire a professional)
