Meeting at a public restaurant, architect arrives.

Architect; Goodday sir, how are you doing.

Client; very well, welcome my architect. Sit down, what do you care for?

Architect; just table water will do.

Client:- Alright a quick one..I need 7bedrooms duplex (3 down then 4up) on my land I just purchased within town.

Architect:- Okay sir, please what’s your land size. Has it been surveyed?

Client:- yes...I will send the survey plan to you.

Architect:- Okay sir, That’s better .

Client:- How much will it cost ?(complete drawing both Architectural, Structural, Mechanical and Electricals) going for registration.

Architect:- it will cost 700k (slightly negotiable sir)

Client:- that’s way too much, it should be 80k but I will pay 100k, but I will pay you advance of 40k and then 60k when you’re done.

Architect:- 👇👇👇👇 (in my mind) ah swear if no be respect i have for elders, I for Comot your teeth 🦷 right now 😠😡😡

Architect: No sir , I have a team of professionals who are dedicated in their job. We deliver quality jobs within the shortest period of time and yours wont be an exception. We can discount 50k and it's the last price.

Client: it's alright...I'll check and get back to you.

Architect: Alright sir.

MAJOR CONSIDERATIONS FOR CONSTRUCTION OF HIDDEN ROOF..

Hidden roof is the design of roof that is frequently used in this era.
When doing/ constructing a hidden roof,

1.focus on waterproofing and drainage. The gutters must be properly finished with felting/ tiling to prevent leaks and structural damage,

2. Make use of waterproof cement on parapet walls both in and out.

3.Ensure significant overlaps in roofing. select high-quality roofing sheets.

4. Ensure Proper installation of roofing sheets as low-sloped roofs may accumulate water, leading to moisture buildup .

Let's talk about public buildings and its thought process.

I'm sure you may not guess correctly what this building represents...but I'll tell you.
It is a convention centre. A conference centre as the layman will say. This project was my MSC project topic back in 2014.

To Architects

While designing public building like churches, airports, malls e.t.c

1.think of a concept or thought process in mind driving your design eg. While designing an airport, something comes to mind...an airplane. That could be the object that informs the concept of that project.

2. During construction, make sure that your concept is followed through and maintained no matter the pressure from your client or other construction professionals..

This will enhance your growth and relevance in practice

Question; who can guess the concept behind this design?

CONTRACTOR VS CONSULTANT

In the construction and project management industries, two distinct roles often get confused: contractors and consultants. While both play crucial roles, their responsibilities, expertise, and objectives differ significantly.
Understanding these differences is essential for effective project planning, ex*****on, and management.
Let's dive deeper into the roles and responsibilities of contractors and consultants accordingly.

CONTRACTOR
A contractor is an individual or organization that agrees to perform specific work or provide services for a client in exchange for payment.
A contractor's responsibilities during construction typically include the following :

RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Executing the project : Carrying out the construction work according to plans, specifications and contractual agreement.
2. Managing labor and resources : Overseeing the workforce, materials, labour and equipment.
3. Managing site safety : Ensuring a safe working environment for workers and others on construction site.
4. Managing labor and resources.: Overseeing the workforce, materials, and equipment needed for the project.
5. Meeting project deadlines : Managing costs and ensuring the project is completed on time and within the agreed- budget.
6. Communication : Communicating with client and consultant informed about project progress and any issues that arise.

CONSULTANT
A consultant on the other hand is an expert who provides professional advice, guidance, and services to clients in a specific field or industry. Consultants are typically responsible for the following functions;

RESPONSIBILITIES
A consultant's responsibilities during construction can typically be grouped under three headings :-
* Construction monitoring.
* Communication and Coordination.
* Project completion.

(A.) Construction Monitoring
1. Site visits : Regularly visiting the construction site to monitor progress and identify potential issues.
2. Quality control : Ensuring the construction work meets the required standards and specifications.
3. Compliance monitoring : Verifying compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards.

(B.) Communication and Coordination
1. Client communication : Keeping the client informed about project progress and any issues that arise.
2. Coordination with contractors : Working with contractors to ensure the project is executed according to plan.
3. Resolving issues : Identifying and resolving technical issues or disputes that may arise during construction.

(C.) Project Completion
1. Final inspections : Conducting final inspections to ensure the project meets the required standards.
2. Certification and approval : Providing certification or approval of the completed work.
3. Documentation : Maintaining records and documentation of the construction process

KEY DIFFERENCES
In summary, the key difference between the contractor and consultant are as fallows :

- Contractor : A contractor is responsible for executing specific tasks or projects, such as construction, renovation, or installation. They oversee the physical work, manage labor and materials, and ensure timely completion.

- Consultant : A consultant provides expert advice, guidance, and recommendations to clients on specific projects or issues. They assess, analyze, and solve problems, often specializing in areas like design, engineering, or project management.

STOP ASKING ARCHITECTS HOW MUCH YOUR BUILDING PROJECT WILL COST.
(It's not their job)

Architect design and bring your vision to life with structure, beauty and function. But they are not trained to give you accurate construction costs. That's the role of a Quantity Surveyor.

When you mixed up roles, you get bad estimates, unnecessary delays and unfinished projects.

Site supervision is a very tedious task. It's energy demanding.It involves constant alertness. In general, anything supervision requires maximum attention and it's quite difficult to achieve.

If you are intending to be a Site Engineer/Supervisor, be ready to put your all-in-all. Because you are at the receiving end,whether the project is successful or not.

You're the eye piece of every construction team member. Equip yourself as much as possible, and be ready to charge as you desire.
