I still remember the day Mike showed up to site wearing slippers.
Everyone laughed.
He said, “Abeg, it’s just a five-minute job. I’ll be done before anybody notices.”
Five minutes later, the job was done.
Nothing happened.
No injury.
No drama.
And that was exactly where the real problem started.
When nothing happens, people start to believe nothing will ever happen.
So the next day, another person came without a helmet.
The week after, someone climbed scaffold with no harness.
Little by little, “It’s just small work” became the company culture.
Until the morning it wasn’t.
One slip.
One rusty nail.
One preventable injury.
And suddenly everybody remembered the PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) they had ignored for months.
The truth is: Safety doesn’t fail in one day — it fails in small habits.
By the time the mistake becomes obvious, the damage is already done.
