How can architecture scale sustainability while staying rooted in culture and place?

🌍 Meet Kai-Uwe Bergman , FAIA – Partner at BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group), where he leads global business development and oversees urban and landscape projects across 40+ countries.

He contributed to the iconic BIG U resilience plan for Manhattan and has led major projects like the Smithsonian Master Plan, Reimagining Brooklyn Bridge, and Brooklyn Queens Park. Kai-Uwe is also Partner-in-Charge of the Gelephu Mindfulness City—a visionary, timber-based economic and cultural hub in Bhutan grounded in Gross National Happiness.

At GSS25 Nepal, Kai-Uwe Bergmann will share how BIG’s global practice merges ecological thinking, resilient design, and cultural context to shape the architecture of tomorrow—highlighting the Gelephu Mindfulness City in Bhutan as a model where vernacular architecture, rational woodcraft, and digital fabrication converge to position timber as a future material, deeply rooted in culture, sustainability, and place.

Why is Nepal the perfect home for the TIMBER FUTURES workshop?

Nepal is a land of towering mountains, cascading rivers, and dense forests that stretch from tropical plains to alpine meadows. It's a place of meditation and togetherness, where daily life is deeply rooted in spiritual rhythms and social cohesion. From village gatherings to sacred rituals, the spirit of community and balance flows through every part of life here.

Here, wood is more than a material. It is tradition, culture, and craft-handed down through generations of artisans who carved entire cities in timber. Nepal's iconic wooden architecture, especially in the Kathmandu Valley, reflects an unmatched relationship with nature and time.

Today, with over 40% forest cover and a growing movement for community-managed forestry, Nepal is poised to reimagine this legacy. With new tools-engineered timber, digital fabrication, and life-cycle design-Nepal becomes a living lab where ancestral wisdom meets innovation.

GSS25 Nepal is a global invitation:

To learn from the past.

To build with purpose.

To shape a timber future rooted in craft, culture, and sustainability.
