An inspiring presentation by Alix Abanda (Beca) on Lighting Design for Studio 602 Architectural Engineering postgraduates at the University of Canterbury.

The session explored the transformational role of light - from revealing materiality and shaping volumes, to the interplay between natural and artificial light.

Alix expanded Studio 602 students’ awareness of how light influences our biological rhythms, emotional responses, and overall experience of the built environment.

It’s been exciting to see physical site models taking shape at the University of Canterbury. These analogue design tools offer a deeply engaging counterbalance to our heavily digitalised world.

In Studio 602, engineering and architectural postgraduates set aside their laptops, tablets and smartphones to work in groups to make a series of site models at varying scales to understand the site and context for their designs for a new house - Rutherford House. The clients observed this hands-on process helped students genuinely appreciate and learn “the importance of typology”.

This year I have had the honour of teaching a collaborative design studio in Architectural Engineering at University of Canterbury alongside Richard Voss, UC's Architect in Residence.

First up: The architectural engineering postgraduates of Studio 602, exploring the site of the future Rutherford House and learning about the Rutherford Family history with Mount Pleasant. There’s no better way than to finalise a brief with a walk on site!
