Met up with Ezra to taste test the southern Magnolia today. Stunning flower, divine smell… but the taste? Resinous, bitter, and unpalatable. That being said, bitter doesn’t always mean toxic. This magnolia is high in tannins that make it very astringent. Tannins are known to tighten tissue, reduce inflammation, and protect wounds. Some species of magnolia are delicious, this one, not so much. None of them are toxic but i recommend you do not eat this one. Instead you can soak in water and use it to wash/soothe cuts and grazes or take the itch out of bites and stings.
