LESSONS FROM THE FIELD | JUNE 2026 - link is in our bio.

One of the most common issues we see on earthworks projects isn't poor installation – it's selecting the wrong sediment control for the site conditions.

Sometimes we see silt fences installed where runoff can never reach them.

Other times we see standard silt fences expected to manage catchments that really require diversion bunds, clean water cut-off drains, or sediment retention ponds.

We also regularly see Super Silt Fence specified where a standard silt fence would achieve the same outcome at a lower cost.

The lesson?

✅ More control isn't always better.

✅ Less control isn't always enough.

✅ The right control, in the right place, for the right reason.

🚫 When Convenience Costs Compliance🚫

This silt fence was cut open to let a mower through… and now it’s doing absolutely nothing.

You can see the result:
➡️ Concentrated flow paths forming
➡️ Sediment bypassing the control
➡️ Fence integrity completely compromised

A silt fence only works when it’s continuous and sealed. The moment you “hack a gap,” you’ve essentially created a direct highway for sediment.

If access is needed, do it properly:
Install a stabilised entry/exit point
Use a culvert or controlled crossing
Reinstate and compact the fence immediately after.

This is a classic example of how small shortcuts can lead to non-compliance, environmental risk, and rework costs.

✅ Build it right the first time
✅ Maintain it properly
✅ Don’t cut corners (literally)

Locked in and finished off

The majority of this silt fence was already installed — today was about completing the final section once the wing wall was in place.

Timing it right means everything ties in properly and performs how it should.

✔️ Clean finish around the structure
✔️ Proper toe-in to prevent undercutting
✔️ Fully tensioned and sealed system

This is how you keep control of sediment — staged installs done at the right time, not rushed at the end.

We’ve been a bit quiet on socials lately — over the past 5 weeks we’ve been managing environmental controls
on the Waihi Gold Mine expansion project.

Unfortunately, there’s a strict no social media policy on-site, so we haven’t been able to share any of the work.
