* Starting at $25/hr (wages based on experience)

Job Title: Forestry Plotting Contractor
Location: Tararua area, North Island, New Zealand
Job Description:
We are currently seeking a forestry plotting contractor to join our team in the Tararua area. The ideal candidate will have experience in farm forestry and woodlot block management, as well as a strong understanding of the forestry industry in New Zealand.
Responsibilities:
• Conducting forest inventory surveys and mapping forested areas in farm forestry and woodlot blocks
• Collecting data on forest stands, including species composition, age, size, and density
• Recording forest measurements and data using electronic equipment and software
• Generating maps and reports to aid in forest management and planning for farm forestry and woodlot blocks
• Working with forestry professionals and landowners to ensure accurate and timely data collection
Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in forestry, natural resources, geography, or related field preferred
• Experience in forest surveying and mapping, with a focus on farm forestry and woodlot blocks
• Familiarity with forestry practices in New Zealand, particularly in the Tararua area
• Proficiency with GPS equipment and mapping software
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently

Develop systems that integrate tree planting with livestock grazing

Systems that integrate tree planting with livestock grazing or crop production are called agroforestry systems.

These systems include: Silvopasture

A type of agroforestry that integrates trees and grazing livestock on the same land.

Silvopasture can increase water retention, provide shade, and increase carbon sequestration. To manage silvopasture, you need to:
*Move livestock frequently to allow for adequate rest and recovery

*Use rotational grazing systems to minimize damage to trees

*Plan for long-term tree regeneration

Agroforestry
A general term for the practice of integrating trees, crops, and livestock. Agroforestry systems are characterized by the "4I's":
Intentional: The components are designed and managed as a whole unit
Intensive: The system requires intensive management, such as annual cultivation, irrigation, and fertilization
Interactive: The interactions between the components are actively and sustainably managed
Integrated: The components are managed as a single unit
Agroforestry systems can provide economic, environmental, and social benefits. However, they can be challenging to implement and maintain. Some challenges include:
High upfront investments
Poor access to markets, insurance, and credit
Trade-offs between using crop residues to feed livestock versus to improve soil health
Environmental benefits of grassland ecosystems can be impaired
