A couple of tips for during the storm.

If your power starts surging, or turning off and on, turn your power off at the mainswitch located on your switchboard/fuseboard.

If you lose water, switch off the power to your hotwater cylinder until the water is on again. If your cylinder somehow empies while the water is off then your element will blow. This won't only cost $ but is also very inconvenient when you finally want that hot shower.
