Branding along with a well prepared business strategy are essential with any small business to ensure a visible identity matches services being provided. Our business, Coast Lawns & Property Care underwent a branding change to reflect our growth post level 2 covid lockdown in 2020. We experienced a sudden spurge for light landscaping services and a higher number of requests by new and existing clients for property care services. As a result of a greater workflow and subsequent increased revenue we were able to hire more staff, sourced locally and move our business in a new direction.

In any small business its easy to drop your guard and miss critical compliance or legislated requirements. We were recently hit with an employment related issue and sought the assistance of the EMA who have been really helpful by providing experienced legal assistance and support. As employers its extremely important to be totally aware of your obligations under the Employment Relations Act 2000 not matter whether you have 1 or 100 staff...…size is of no relevance if you get it wrong.

The APT can be a lovely family pet but when they have a bad day you don't want to be nearby and exposing young children to their tantrums is a receipe for disaster. Most dogs bite, in fact any dog has the potential to bite (including my own Sh*tzu) but when dogs such as the Mastiff breeds bite they can inflict horrific deep wounds or worse.

Five minutes after a tearful discussion about putting woman's dog down, it viciously attacked her.

Some good progress in Nelson since the new bylaw was introduced in December and SBH provided training to compliance & finance staff.

Great news from Nelson City with the success of their new Freedom Camping Bylaw. Bylaw reports and site by site impact assessments on the new bylaw were provided to Nelson City Council by David Hammond of Freedom Camping Solutions. Once the bylaw was adopted by Council, Steve Hart of SBH Enterprises Ltd provided the enforcement training and guidance to the compliance and finance teams. Great endorsement showing that the right approach can be a "win win" for communities, tourism and freedom campers.

Last summer freedom campers overran some Nelson carparks. This year they've been sent packing.

All vehicle access to a controversial freedom camping spot will be blocked off in just under two weeks time.

Interesting how some wardens can achieve a high ticket ratio compared to others who don't but will say compliance is better in their area. Its worth while swapping compliance staff around so that each works a different patch and then compare the differences. Is it fair that some use blinkers and just cover the beat while others get out there and do the job fairly and reasonably.

Great job, says mayor, as Upper Hutt's lone warden issues 5744 tickets in a year.

I'm currently working on a presentation being provided by SBH Enterprises Ltd to Nelson City Council on 20th November 2017. The presentation is to the NCC compliance contractors on the enforcement of their new Freedom Camping Bylaw.
Nelson City Council adopted a new Freedom Camping Bylaw earlier this year and will be enforcing the bylaw from December 1st. Hopefully this will see a change in attitudes of freedom campers similar to here on The Coromandel where compliance has improved considerably with the majority of non self contained campers staying overnight in holiday parks, backpackers or DoC campsites rather than risk fines by staying on reserves and within car parks. http://nelson.govt.nz/recreation/recreation/parks-and-reserves/freedom-camping

To make sure the region stays beautiful and accessible for all to enjoy Nelson City Council has adopted the Nelson City Freedom Camping Bylaw. This comes into effect from 1 December 2017. From that date different rules will apply for non-self-contained vehicles and certified self-contained vehicles.

Totally agree with the banning of this cheap and barbaric method of disposing of dogs that can not be rehomed. When I started as an Animal Conrol Officer in 2004 with a contractor to TCDC the method of disposal was to use a .22 and (thankfully) I only used it once (on a very dangerous dog) as dogs were generally disposed of by another officer in Thames. This disposal method was reviewed in 2011 when we brouht animal control services "in house" and we looked at several options including bolt guns. The video footage I viewed as the Compliance Team Leader was quite shocking as the bolt generally didn't always kill the dog outright and the bolt had to be twisted about in the dogs skull / brain to finalise its death. We opted instead for disposal using a lethal injection by qualified vets and incorporated the $40 fee into our budgets. Despite some public perceptions Animal Control Officers are very compassionate about dogs and the officers I worked with t TCDC never enjoyed the task of dog disposal. It is part of the job but it should always be done with humanity, compassion and respect. Councils just need to ensure dog disposal is another cost factor of managing dog control but firstly councils should do their utmost to rehome suitable dogs themselves or enter into a relationship with a local SPCA, animal shelter or dog rehoming groups to give dogs a second chance. We reduced disposals by 52% over two years using our "second chance dogs program" thereby reducing costs and getting enormous satisfaction of witnessing good dogs going to suitable homes. Too many dogs are simply being abandoned by owners and responsibility passed onto animal control staff to deal with the problem of rehoming or disposal......this is a wider problem that also needs to be addressed nationwide.

Public outcry leads Invercargill to dump use of bolt gun on impounded dogs.
