A great result today for the Mana Rākau people who faced charges in court for their peaceful protests to protect the big trees of Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland. Three diversions and a discharge without conviction.
But they shouldn’t have had to face charges because they shouldn’t have had to do what they did. It’s because of a failure of our law to protect trees that these people faced court today.
So the fight to regain general tree protection continues and we support them in that.

When general tree protection was removed from law by John Key's National government, “we saw the chainsaws coming out across our biggest cities."
The consequence of that is we've lost a third of the urban canopy, which is a phenomenal loss in the space of 10 years.
