Wairarapa gardeners quick reality check 👇

Labour Weekend isn’t when the season starts

it’s when you either win or lose your summer harvest.

If your beds aren’t built, prepped, and planted before then you’re already playing catch-up.

The “Great Masterton Planting” is just 28 weeks away. That sounds like ages, until it isn’t.

Most people wait until October. By then? You’ve missed the best growing window.

So we put together something actually useful:

A free 20-page Vegetable Garden Playbook built specifically for Wairarapa conditions.

No fluff.

Just:

* What to plant
* When to plant it
* How to get a proper yield

👉 Grab your copy here:

Get the plan.
Grow the food.

Hope everyone had a great long weekend.

Let's be honest, when the whole country takes four days off at the same time, you don't argue with it.

Now, back to business and yes, it is very much still my business.

I'll admit the April Fools post landed a little too well. A few of you reached out genuinely concerned that George had taken the reins. I appreciate the love, but I should clarify: IRD has a strict policy on four-legged sole traders. Something about being unable to hold a pen. Or file a GST return. George is devastated, obviously.

While George was busy plotting his takeover, we were fitting out this kitchen in Masterton. Pre-built cabinets custom fitted throughout, floor opened up for new plumbing, and a full fridge surround and overhead cabinet built from scratch. The kind of job that starts messy and finishes tidy.

The Wairarapa Handyman is alive, well, and fully booked but not too booked to talk if you've got something that needs sorting.

After a lot of thought, I've made the decision to step back from the tools.

It's been an incredible few years building this business from the ground up; the jobs, the people, the problem-solving, the satisfaction of leaving someone's home better than I found it. I'm genuinely proud of what The Wairarapa Handyman has become and the reputation we've built across Masterton, Carterton, Greytown, Featherston and Martinborough.

But every good tradesman knows when a job's done right and I think this one is.

Effective immediately, all operations will be handed over to my most trusted colleague. He's been on every single job since day one. He knows every client. He's never missed a day's work, never complained about the hours, and his customer satisfaction rating is, frankly, better than mine.

I'm confident you're in the best possible hands.

Please join me in welcoming your new head of operations, George. đŸŸ

An Open Letter to Fellow Wairarapa Trades

We all turn up to site with a job to do.
Deadlines, clients watching, weather closing in - I get it.

But can we all agree on one small thing?

Walking onto a job and treating it like you’re the only trade that matters doesn’t make you efficient. It just makes the day harder for everyone else.

We share driveways.
We share power.
We share access.
Sometimes we even share the same 3 square metres of floor space.

There’s no need for chest-thumping, tool-dropping, van-blocking, or pretending no one else exists.

A quick “Hey mate, what are you working on?” goes a long way.
A bit of coordination saves time for everyone.
And basic respect costs nothing.

We’re all trying to make a living.
We’re all representing our businesses.
And we’re all part of the same small community.

Professional doesn’t mean passive.
But it definitely doesn’t mean prehistoric.

Let’s make site days smoother - for clients and for each other.

Transparent & Fair Service

At The Wairarapa Handyman, honesty, clarity, and professionalism are non-negotiable.

Here’s how we operate:
‱ Call-out visits always include travel, setup, assessment, and initial work on site.
‱ Mileage and equipment use are factored into our charges — we don’t sneak in hidden costs.
‱ Workmanship: We stand by our work. If something isn’t right, we’ll come back and fix it — no questions asked.

Every client is treated the same. Let us be clear: we do NOT take advantage of vulnerable clients, and our fees reflect the time, skill, and professionalism we bring to every job.

If you’re curious about a job, we’re happy to provide a clear, written estimate upfront — no surprises, no hidden charges.

I clipped a wing earlier this week so I’ve been limited to what I’ve been able to do. I’ve still managed to rock out a raised planter (and wrap a mailbox post) for friends, who were very happy.
