More of our clients are turning to organic growing, it’s fast becoming one of the most common requests we get.

Having built many outdoor kitchens and organic veggie gardens, we’re always fine-tuning our systems, learning something new with every install.

So here it is, 4 wicking beds from scratch.

A wicking bed isn’t just another garden box. It’s a self-watering system with a hidden reservoir underneath, feeding moisture straight to the roots when the plants need it. Great for people who aren’t always home!

This is part 1 of 3.
The groundwork, and the team cutting the timber and forming the boxes.
Stay tuned for stage 2.

The Matakana community showed up, and together we got 5,700 natives in the ground.

This is us taking direct action for our harbour. And if this excites you, we would love for you to join the movement. Get in touch to be involved in our next planting day.

A massive thank you to everyone who made it happen:
Pat from Natures Vision.
Chris, Jared and their team at Chris Drinnan
Alicia from Whangateau Catchment Collective Whangateau Catchment Collective
Auckland Parks Auckland’s Local Boards

And to every single person who turned up on the day. We had real strength in numbers, with crews from Matakana Berry Co. and northernbalustrades getting stuck in & bringing the good vibes.

This is only the beginning 🌿

With the predicted dry spell on its way, now is the best time to think about mulch.

A fresh layer helps your soil hold its moisture, feeds your plants, keeps the weeds down, and means less watering too. Plus it just looks so much better!!

Does your garden need a mulch top up? If it is looking a little thirsty in places, the Rochford garden maintenance team would be happy to help. Just drop us a line at [email protected] and we will sort the rest.

Our garden maintenance team take care of everything, from one off clear outs to ongoing pruning, weeding, and general upkeep.

Incase you haven’t heard…I love re-veg.

I’ve always wanted to make a tangible difference on the ground, and this initiative with the Whangateau Catchment Collective is our chance to build something bigger and drive real change for the harbour, the catchment and the community.

What keeps me going is a simple picture…
Driving across Whangateau, looking out to a block of land, and seeing it restored in native plants, knowing it was made possible by the people and businesses in our own community.

This is our way of giving back to a place we’re so grateful to operate in.

So we’re inviting you to plant 5,700 native plants with us to help restore the Whangateau Harbour.

The way I see it, it’s a big area, one we’re lucky to call home, and it’s made up of thousands of smaller ones. If we can support regeneration on just one of those areas, we’re helping move the catchment project forward physically, while also creating a model others can follow.

That’s the plan. We put 1% of our annual profit into revegetating this catchment. We buy the plants, prep the site and maintain it. The Whangateau Catchment Collective secures the land and cuts the red tape, then we do what we’re good at. Direct action on the ground.

But we can’t cover a whole harbour on our own. That’s where you come in.

Bring a mate, bring some sturdy shoes and a planting spade, and help us leave a lasting mark on this beautiful region 🌿 🌊

A huge thank you to everybody who have helped create this momentum, Alicia at Whanagteau Catchment Collective & to Auckland Parks.

Chris Drinnan have come to the party & matched our contribution & Pat - the legend at Nature’s Vision for providing the natives.

Wow alright. Trust the process.

This coastal garden was freshly planted back in December, & we thought it looked amazing then 😅
Swipe to see the difference now.

That kind of growth doesn’t just happen on its own. It comes down to the right care, at the right time, all year round.

Here is what our team have been doing to care for this garden
- Trimming the Muehlenbeckia & keeping it low to the ground
- Pruning & shaping the hedges to hold their form
- Topping up mulch/ bark levels to suppress weeds & lock in moisture
- Removing all debris so everything stays tidy & healthy

If you want to get the most out of your garden this season, we’d love to help. Get in touch with the team [email protected]

This has been a collaborative effort with Whangateau Catchment Collective , Matakana Landscape Supplies, Nature’s Vision and Auckland Parks.

For us, this is about Rochford giving back. We’ve committed to donating 1% of our annual profit to revegetating the Whangateau catchment. In a practical sense, we do that by physically buying the plants with that money - and we’re also committing to preparing and maintaining the area those plants will cover.

So let’s say our donation comes to $3,000 a year. That might buy 300 plants, which could cover around 4,000m². So in any given year, Rochford Landscapes could be responsible for revegetating and maintaining 4,000m² and up.

The Whangateau Catchment Collective is a powerhouse behind this initiative! They handle the groundwork of securing sensitive catchment land, working alongside landowners and tying it all together.

Then we step in and do what we’re good at.…direct action.

What we’re hoping is to build a model other successful businesses in the region can follow and get on board with.

We already have Matakana Landscape Supplies on as a major partner. With the help of them we can take a relatively small number we could manage on our own and multiply it many times over. This year we only had $2,500, so we worked with Matakana Landscape Supplies to match our profit - and they did.
We want to work with more local businesses to make a happen.

The goal is to find a block of land - a big area of sensitive catchment - that we can completely regenerate over the years, leaving a lasting impact on the area and the whole Whangateau catchment.

This is something bigger than one planting day 🌊🌳
