We’ve been away in Sydney for the past few weeks, so it’s been easy to delay the final meet the team instalment, me haha.

I’m Bianca, the other owner of Better House Painters.

For the first 2.5 years of BHP, I worked alongside Sam as a brush hand, and did our books and quotes after hours. (RIP)

Now that we’ve got an incredible team working with us, I’ve been able to transition off site and into the office. I handle our quotes and estimates, scheduling, comms, and logistics. I also run our sales & marketing channels. Anyone who’s worked with us will know that I believe there is a spreadsheet to be made for every occasion. 🤓

As a kid, my siblings and I grew up on building sites, with my parents operating a residential construction business. We were all put on the brush early on, which worked out well for us kids for pocket money, but I’m pretty sure it caused a few headaches for other trades involved 😅

I don’t think anyone would have guessed I’d be running a house painting business after studying fine arts at university, but I’ve come to understand that running a small business is a constant (and intense) exercise in applied creativity and analytical thinking!!

Introducing Sam!

Sam grew up in Avalon, surfing and exploring the acclaimed landscape of Sydney’s Northern Beaches. If you’ve ever visited, you’ll know the ocean is a force present in everyday life for those living on the beaches. Fresh out of high school, he started his training as a house painter, servicing prestigious homes throughout Sydney.

After becoming trade qualified, Sam also gained is GreenPainters Accreditation which was driven in large by his strong respect for the ocean. This accreditation trains painters in sustainable practices that reduce energy use, protect the health of occupants and protect the environment 💪

By the time he ended up in New Zealand (led here by another passion, Regenerative Farming), he had over a decade of experience in the construction industry under his belt.

Settling on the Matakana Coast with the desire to build something of his own, he started Better House Painters based on his personal principles of reducing waste, protecting health, and protecting the environment.

Known for his meticulous attention to detail, mischievous humour, and constant reorganising of the tool kits, Sam wears 20 different hats as the business owner and somehow manages to paint houses too!

Obviously there would be no BHP without Sam, and he is a constant source of light and laughter for our team and our clients ☀️ thanks Sam 💛🌊

Introducing Martin! 📢

Martin joined us in October last year, bringing 15 years in the construction industry with him. He spent 11 years specialising in gib fixing and plastering, and more recently working with micro cement and lime plaster. Martin’s work is incredibly precise and detailed.

Somehow he can be two steps ahead of us on what’s happening on site, while making us all laugh at the same time.

Introducing Phia, BHP’s first Apprentice 🙌

If you’ve met Phia on one of our jobs you’ll know her infectious smile and enthusiasm to get stuck in!

Phia approached us looking for an apprentice opportunity in August 2025, and has been a part of the team ever since. We’d never trained an apprentice before and we’re really grateful that she encouraged us to take that step!

As an apprentice her role on the team is to do all the jobs none of us want to do. Jokes. She’s honing her skills foundational to a high quality paint finish; prep!
