As a woman in the trades, having workwear that actually fits is so important. Whether youโ€™re a smaller size where menโ€™s XS is still too big, or youโ€™re 8 months pregnant like me, properly fitting clothing isnโ€™t just about comfort โ€” when gear is too baggy, it can quickly become a safety hazard.

Luckily, as part of BCITOโ€™s Actions Speak Louder initiative, theyโ€™ve teamed up with the absolute legends to offer BCITO women apprentices an exclusive 25% discount ๐Ÿค‘

Queens Workwear was founded by Becca and Alex with one clear goal: to make women feel supported, confident, and comfortable on site. When your clothes fit properly, youโ€™re not worrying about how you look or how you feel โ€” which means better morale and being able to fully focus on the task at hand.

To access the discount, head to myBCITO โ†’ Women in Trades Hub โ†’ Actions Speak Louder and get yourself sorted ๐Ÿ‘

Where have I been?!

Its been a while since I have updated my page, and its because I have been so busy on and OFF the tools!! Getting my hair and makeup done for a photoshoot ๐Ÿ’…๐Ÿผ being interviewed by the newspaper, speaking at panel discussions and going on the radio!!! Along with being super super busy on the tools aswell, it doesnt leave much time for social media!

I was so fortunate to be asked to be apart of the Actions Speak Louder Campaign by BCITO, an awesome movement to support women in the trades by providing discounted workwear (that actually fits!), training programmes to help prevent injuries, FREE period products, access to discounted portaloos and sanitation facilities like sanitary bins. To read more you can follow this link: https://bcito.org.nz/women/actions-speak-louder/

And then because of this campaign and my face being plastered (haha, get it ๐Ÿ˜…) everywhere on billboards, social media platforms etc, i was asked to have a newspaper article written in the Bay of Plenty Times!! (now shared on sunlive) Read about it here: https://www.sunlive.co.nz/news/371391-initiative-aims-to-welcome-more-women-into-trades.html

And because of the newspaper interview, the radio wanted to speak to me! So heres a clip of me on the radio (count how many times i said "um" ๐Ÿ˜‚): https://youtu.be/Q0Rpzxuev3g?si=Qn_Z8tH2uBonzFnI

AND, this Thursday, i have been asked to represent Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation at the NAWIC NZ We Belong: The Power of Presence panel discussion! If youd like to come along, its FREE, just register here: https://events.humanitix.com/women-paving-the-way-discussion-panel-pbqcp86l?_gl=1*1k7t4zp*_gcl_au*MTQxMTUyNjY5NS4xNzU3NDg5Mjcx*_ga*ODEwODgxNTIxLjE3NTc0ODkyNzI.*_ga_LHKW5FR9N6*czE3NTc4ODMyMzMkbzE4JGcxJHQxNzU3ODgzNjk0JGo1NCRsMCRoMA..

So yea, thats where Ive been ๐Ÿ˜… we are still full swing into plastering too! Have completed a few big jobs lately which i also have been pulling long days at! If you need any plastering work, please still contact me! We still have availability for this year!! We have found a trusted contractor to help us out on the big jobs, so hopefully no more massive days!!

Its been a full on year so far, and i cant wait to see whats coming up!! Stay tuned, and thanks for being apart of my journey this far ๐Ÿซถ

Something you don't see too often is me with a dress on let alone MAKEUP ASWELL ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ’…๐Ÿผ

What an incredible night Friday was, where I took out the Rising Star - Site award at the prestigious NAWIC Excellence Awards held at the Cordis Hotel in Auckland.

This award recognises women with 2-6 years of on-site experience in the construction industry who lead by example. I always strive to encourage the future generation of wahine to take the leap and give it a go so to be named the winner of this award means so so much ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿผ

Thank you so much to NAWIC for organising this annual event, what an inspiring evening to be apart of! Thank you so much to Ricki from Topline Carpenters for mentoring me through this rollercoaster we call owning a business and showing both me and Watts Stops so much support always. Thank you to my family and friends who came out to celebrate with me and made the journey up ๐Ÿ’— and most of all thank you to Tommy - you are my rock, my biggest supporter and my favourite tradie banter partner โค๏ธ

This is only the beginning for Watts Stops and i CANNOT WAIT to see what will come next ๐Ÿคญ๐Ÿฅฐ

๐Ÿšจ PSA: Why Itโ€™s So Important to Seal Fresh Plaster Properly ๐Ÿšจ

I recently went back to a job to do a small extra area that had been added after the original plastering was finished. While I was there, I noticed something wasnโ€™t right โ€” the paint was flaking off the walls I'd already completed.

Hereโ€™s what happens when the wrong sealer is used:
Fresh plaster is super porous. Water-based sealers donโ€™t bond properly โ€” they can re-soften the surface and cause poor adhesion. So the paint doesnโ€™t stick the way it should, and eventually starts lifting or flaking off.

And hereโ€™s the kicker โ€” the process to fix it is way more work than doing it right the first time:

๐Ÿ” Trip 1: I was originally just there for the extra bit, but ended up scraping back all the flaking paint from the existing areas.
๐Ÿ” Trip 2: Went back to apply an oil-based sealer and let it dry overnight (min. 12 hours).
๐Ÿ” Trip 3: Once dry, I had to refill any deeper scrapes with base coat plaster.
๐Ÿ” Trip 4: Returned again to apply top coat plaster. (If the damaged areas need ANOTHER coat, add one more trip)
๐Ÿ” Trip 5: And finally, one more trip to sand and tidy up โ€” just to get it back to a paint-ready finish.

That's up to 6 extra visits that could've been avoided if the correct sealer was used in the first place.

โœจ Lesson: Always use a pigment sealer or oil-based primer over new plaster. Itโ€™s not just a recommendation โ€” itโ€™s essential for long-lasting results.
