🌳 From root-infested to flowing again.

These before and after images were taken at the exact same location inside a wastewater drain in Tamatea, Napier during a root cutting job completed this week.

Tree roots had entered the pipe through a defect and were growing inside the drain, restricting the available flow path and increasing the risk of recurring blockages.

Using specialist root cutting equipment, the root mass was removed from inside the pipe before the line was flushed and reinspected.

The difference between the two images shows just how much root growth can develop inside a drain before a complete blockage occurs.

Many recurring blocked drains, slow drains, gurgling toilets, and wastewater backups are caused by underlying defects that allow roots to enter the pipe.

Removing the roots restores flow. Identifying how they entered the drain helps determine the best long-term solution.

A blocked drain in Hastings is usually the symptom — not the actual problem.
Most people only see the overflow, slow drainage or recurring blockage. What CCTV inspections often reveal underneath is a drainage system already failing structurally.

Tree roots in Hastings don’t just disappear after a blockage is cleared — they usually come back through the same failed joints and damaged pipework. 🌳

During a CCTV inspection of an older wastewater line, we found recurring root intrusion re-entering through separated sections in the drainage system. While the line had previously been cleared, the structural entry point inside the pipe still remained.

This is one of the most common causes of recurring drain problems across Hawke’s Bay.

Root cutting restores flow and removes the immediate restriction, but if the damaged joint or defect remains, roots will continue tracking back toward moisture inside the line over time.

Most blocked drains in Napier are still technically “working” before they completely fail.

During a CCTV inspection of a PVC wastewater line, we found standing water holding inside a bellied section of pipework. While the system was still flowing, the sag in the line was already allowing sediment and waste to settle in the low point instead of fully discharging downstream.

Over time, these areas gradually worsen and often become repeat blockage zones — especially in older drainage systems around Hawke’s Bay.

We attended a property in Napier after wastewater started surcharging through the gully during normal household use.

On CCTV inspection, the wastewater line was found heavily restricted with a combination of fat buildup, debris, and root intrusion inside the older pipework.

As grease, soap residue, and waste continue building along the walls of the pipe, the diameter of the line gradually becomes smaller, slowing flow and trapping even more material behind it.

Over time, what starts as a slow restriction can eventually lead to wastewater backing up around the property.

Blocked gully in Havelock North — this is what slowly restricts the flow over time.

We attended a property after the outside gully stopped draining properly and began holding wastewater.

On inspection, the gully was heavily restricted with a build-up of sludge, debris, and organic waste that had gradually reduced the flow through the trap.

As the restriction builds, wastewater can no longer discharge properly, causing the gully to hold water and increasing the risk of overflow around the property.

We cleared the build-up and restored proper flow through the gully and wastewater line.
