This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, and the 2026 theme is “Belonging Matters.”

It’s a particularly relevant message for the construction industry. According to MATES in Construction, our industry loses nearly one person every week to su***de.

That’s a difficult statistic to read—but it also reminds us why connection, support and a genuine sense of belonging are so important.

Belonging doesn’t always require a big initiative. It can be created through the smaller things we do every day: welcoming someone new, including people, recognising their contribution, listening properly and checking in when a mate doesn’t seem like themselves.

We spend a large part of our lives alongside the people we work with. This week is a timely reminder to look out for one another and make the time to ask:

“How are you really doing?”

Sometimes a small moment of connection can mean far more than we realise.

A little trip back through the Orkney archives.

This Wellington home was renovated by Kevin in the early days of Orkney Group, back when he was still the sole builder on the tools.

A lot has changed since then.

The team has grown to 25, the types and scale of projects we take on have evolved, and building requirements, products and technology have all moved forward.

But some of the fundamentals haven't changed.

Doing what you say you're going to do. Communicating well. Taking pride in the work. And finding practical solutions when challenges arise.

More than 20 years later, those principles are still at the heart of how we approach our work at Orkney.

The tools may change. The fundamentals don't.

Is your home ready for another Wellington summer?

Spring is a good opportunity to check the exterior of your property and deal with any maintenance issues that may have developed over winter.

Look for peeling or bubbling paint, deteriorating timber, gaps around windows and doors, blocked gutters, drainage problems and any areas that appear to be letting in moisture.

Individually, these can seem like relatively small jobs. However, leaving them unattended can allow water to get into places it shouldn’t, potentially leading to more extensive and expensive repairs.

A little preventative maintenance can go a long way towards protecting your home.

How do you know when it’s actually time to renovate your home?

For many Wellington homeowners, it’s not one big thing. It’s a collection of smaller frustrations that gradually become harder to ignore.

The layout no longer works. You need another bedroom or bathroom. Storage is always overflowing. Some rooms barely get used. Or your home feels cold, draughty and overdue for some attention.

If you love where you live, these things don’t necessarily mean it’s time to move.

A well-planned home renovation can make better use of the space you already have, while a home extension may be the answer if you genuinely need more room.

The best renovation details are often the little ones.

As part of this recently completed Wellington renovation, the laundry was completely reconfigured and rebuilt to make much better use of the space.

There’s plenty of storage, soft-close cabinetry, a generous benchtop and sink, and room for both the washing machine and dryer.

But one of our favourite details is much smaller.

Look closely at the cabinetry on the right and you'll see a cut-out at floor level, designed specifically to give the family cat its own spot for food and water bowls.

It's a small detail, but a great example of what happens when a renovation is planned around how the people living in the home will actually use it.

Because a successful renovation isn't just about creating a home that looks good. It's about creating one that works beautifully for everyday life.

Wallpaper with a large, detailed pattern can be unforgiving, especially when you add sloping walls and irregular edges into the mix.

John recently wallpapered three bedrooms for this client, carefully working with the different spaces to make sure the patterns lined up and the finished result looked just right.

And it sounds like the client was pretty happy with his work!

“We had 3 bedrooms wallpapered by John, and he did absolutely marvellous work. The wallpapers were a challenge because of the large patterns and our sloping drop ceilings, with lots of irregular edges, but he made the pattern look great.

Highly recommend him.”

What does health & safety actually look like behind the scenes on a building site?

On our larger projects, one of the tools we use is the HazardCo app.

Our team scans onto the jobsite when they arrive and uses the app to help manage health & safety throughout the project, including task analysis, risk assessments, toolbox meetings, incident and accident reporting, and vehicle inspections.

Having these processes available from a phone means important H&S information is right there with the team, on site and when they need it.

It's not the most glamorous part of a building project, but it's an important one. Good systems help us identify risks, keep everyone informed and look after the people working on our sites.
