For anyone who’s not in/lives in New Zealand “pōhutukawa” tress are one of the many native trees that we have and they are really beautiful but they come with lots of cons.

1. The spiky flower parts and seed pods constantly drop onto lawns, decks, and driveways, making areas look messy and needing regular cleanup.
2. The dried flower spikes can be sharp and uncomfortable to walk on barefoot. And when you have clothes drying the spikes get all through them and they are impossible to get out.
3. Flower debris gets stuck in grass, drains, gutters, and outdoor mats.
4. When the red flowers and seed pods get wet or crushed, they can leave stains and marks on concrete, paving, and decks. The sticky nectar and flower residue can discolor light-coloured concrete over time.
