🦘 The Plumb FX Local Legend for August is someone who really needs no introduction around Waimate (and further afield) - Gwen Dempster-Schouten from EnkleDooVery Korna Wallaby Park! 💛

😎 There wouldn’t be many people who don’t associate Waimate with Gwen and her famous wallaby park. Gwen has been caring for and hand-rearing orphaned wallabies since 1977, and since opening the park to visitors in 1999, has welcomed people from all over New Zealand and around the world, to Waimate.

🐈 Her love of animals doesn’t stop with wallabies. Over the years Gwen has rescued and cared for cats, dogs, birds, possums and even a pony with cerebral palsy. ❤️

🤩 She’s also one of the Waimate District’s biggest advocates. Actively encouraging her visitors to explore the district, eat locally and support other businesses, helping spread the benefit of the visitors she brings to the district.

🫶 Outside of the park, Gwen is also a huge support to many people in the community and is always willing to help others, without any fuss or expectation of recognition. She has a genuine heart of gold, paired with a famously dry wit and sense of humour that anyone who has met her will know and appreciate!

❤️ When Gwen was nominated as our August Local Legend, she chose a voucher for The Royal Hotel Waimate, and, in typical Gwen style, plans to use it to take some friends out for a meal rather than keeping the treat to herself.

✅ A Waimate icon, a huge advocate for the district, a friend to animals and people alike, and an all-round good sort.

🦅 PLUMB FX LOCAL LEGENDS FOR JULY 🥳

🤩 We're in awe of the incredible work volunteers Jenni Fraser and Angie Tidy from the The New Zealand Raptor Trust do, and we're thrilled to recognise them as our July Plumb FX Local Legends.

😍 Their nomination from fellow volunteer Raewyn says it all:

"Jenni and Angie are available pretty much 24/7. They don't get paid, always make themselves available, and quietly work tirelessly behind the scenes. These remarkable volunteers deserve recognition and support." 👏

💚 Their passion for protecting New Zealand's magnificent birds of prey is nothing short of inspiring....

😎 What started as volunteering in the gardens at the Raptor Trust, with the chance to have a kāhu (Australasian harrier) perch on their shoulder, quickly became a lifelong commitment.

🤩 Today, both Jenni and Angie are MPI-permitted rehabilitation providers, caring for injured kāhu and ruru (morepork) in specially built enclosures at their own homes. Between them, they're currently rehabilitating 10 birds.

🦅 Their dedication doesn't stop there. At the Trust, they also help feed and care for the resident birds and play a key role in the kārearea (New Zealand falcon) breeding programme, helping ensure these native birds have a brighter future.

🚑 When someone finds an injured kāhu, ruru or kārearea, these are often the people who drop everything to help. They rescue, rehabilitate and care for these incredible birds until they're strong enough to be released back into the wild. It's a labour of love that takes countless hours, immense knowledge and unwavering dedication, all as volunteers.

🦉 This year marks 10 years since the New Zealand Raptor Trust began its mission of rescuing, rehabilitating and protecting our native birds of prey, and what a difference they've made.

🦅 This year alone, the Trust has already rehabilitated an impressive 86 birds, giving dozens of our native raptors a second chance at life. .

🦉 With avian influenza (H5N1) now in New Zealand, the demand on wildlife rescue is only likely to increase, making the work of volunteers like Jenni, Angie and the entire Trust team even more important.

👏 Congratulations, ladies! Thank you for everything you do to protect our native wildlife. South Canterbury is incredibly lucky to have you both.
