Did you know? Look up inside Manila's San Agustin Church and the ceiling seems full of carved stone mouldings, rosettes and deep sunken panels. 🎨 Most of it is flat paint! It's a trompe-l'œil ("fool the eye") interior inside the oldest stone church in the Philippines.
🏛️ Oldest in stone: construction began in 1586 and the church was declared complete on January 19, 1607. Two earlier churches on the site, one of bamboo and nipa and one of wood, were both lost to fire.
🧱 Built from local rock: the walls are hewn adobe stone quarried from Meycauayan, Binangonan and San Mateo.
🎨 Painted depth: in the 19th century, Italian painters Alberoni and Dibella covered the vault in trompe-l'œil, so mouldings, rosettes and sunken panels look three-dimensional. UNESCO singles out these ceiling paintings as a highlight.
🌍 Earthquake survivor: it stood through major quakes in 1645, 1699, 1754, 1796, 1825, 1852, 1863 and 1880. In 1863 it was the only public building in Manila left undamaged, though the 1880 quakes cracked a bell tower that was later removed.
🛡️ Still standing: it was the only one of Intramuros' seven churches to survive the 1945 Battle of Manila, and it became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Baroque Churches of the Philippines" in 1993.
Credits: designed by Juan Macías, whom the Augustinians acknowledged as the builder; trompe-l'œil interior by Italian painters Alberoni and Dibella; 1854 renovation supervised by Spanish architect Luciano Oliver; monastery rebuilt as a museum in the 1970s to a design by architect Angel Nakpil.
