Metta takes its name from the Pali word for ‘loving-kindness’ and ‘friendliness for all.’ In the same essence, the Marie Eugenie Theater of the Assumption, or Metta, combines drama, dance, and music to allow every artistic possibility.
ESTABLISHED in 2004, Metta was born at the same time the Mother Rose Auditorium (then known as the Mother Rose Hall) was undergoing major renovations. Marie
Eugenie of Jesus, Foundress of the Religious of the Assumption, Metta exists so that each child can realize their full potential. Metta takes its cue from the Assumption education, whose vision is to develop women of character, faith, and substance; women who will help transform society. Marie Eugenie, who passionately believed in the transformative power of education, encouraged her congregation to “Discover the specific talents and grace of each child.” With this vision, Metta encourages, nurtures, and celebrates the creativity of children with productions that would raise the consciousness of the students and the public in general.
Julliard-trained and Assumption alumna Ms. Ana Valdes-Lim was invited by then college president, Sr. Josefina Magat, r.a., to oversee the theater construction, and run the theater organization as Metta’s artistic director. Originally designed as a student-based theater group, it slowly evolved to encompass the Assumption College San Lorenzo community, and has since been carrying on as a community theater. The programs not only create extraordinary experiences that educate, challenge and inspire young people, it unites the Assumption community in the spirit of volunteerism, and acts as a catalyst for community involvement, inspiration and support. Metta frequently invites professional and semi-professional theater actors and directors to participate in productions.
