BAMBOO STRUCTURES OFFER BIG BENEFITS FOR PH ARCHITECTURE AND CLIMATE
Bamboo is more than just a fast-growing plant — it’s a game-changer for construction, employment, and climate action in the Philippines. During a seminar at Carolina Bamboo Garden in Antipolo, Rizal, experts highlighted bamboo's strength, sustainability, and role in the country’s vernacular architecture.
“In the Philippines, in our vernacular architecture, we have a tradition of using bamboo for our structures… especially with the (climate) conditions in the Philippines,” said Architect Jed Michael de Guzman, emphasizing bamboo's durability and weather compatibility.
Aside from its structural benefits, bamboo also boosts employment due to its labor-intensive cultivation and production process. “At 60-70% labor cost… we are building more jobs,” de Guzman noted.
Bamboo also contributes to climate change mitigation as a regenerative and carbon-negative resource. “Ang bamboo, grow it for 10 years, and every year may harvest ka,” de Guzman added, stressing its environmental sustainability compared to traditional wood.
With its versatility and eco-friendly properties, bamboo offers a promising solution for sustainable development in the Philippines.
