Recently, ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ฒ-๐๐ป๐ด๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฏ๐๐ถ๐น๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐ ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฃ๐๐ are gaining popularity in the construction industry in the Philippines. As a Civil Engineer, one of the key reasons PEB designs require less steel in terms of total weight is the efficiency applied during the design stage.
To achieve a lower steel requirement, section optimization is intentionally applied. One common technique is t๐๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฟ๐๐ฐ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐. Parts of the beam subjected to larger bending moments, usually near fixed end moment connections, are provided with a deeper I beam section. As the bending moment decreases along the span, the beam depth is reduced accordingly.
This approach allows the steel to be placed only where it is structurally needed. Instead of using a uniform section throughout, the member capacity follows the actual bending moment distribution, resulting in a lighter, more efficient structure without compromising strength or performance.
