πŸ“ Mindful living for the modern plant parent. In a world that feels heavy and loud, we focus on the quiet essentials: understanding our plants' needs, resisting the "helicopter plant parent" urge, and finding balance between self-care and plant-care.

Let's talk about something most plant content ignore or shy away from.

Some of the most popular, most beautiful, most desired houseplants on the market right now are toxic to your cats, your dogs, and your children.

Not obscure plants, but plants likely on your wishlist or even in your collection!

Your Pothos. Your Monstera. Your entire Philodendron and Scindapsus collection.
I have hundreds of these plants. I also have cats, dogs, and kids in the house. So yes β€” this episode is personal.

But here's what I want you to know before you panic: not all toxic plants are equally dangerous.

This is not a "throw out your plants" episode. It's a know-your-collection, know-your-response episode. Because you can have your plants and keep them too β€” you just need to figure out how.

So, got Plants? Got Pets?? Got Kids??? This one's for you.

This is what the caterpillars ate last year. 😭🩷

A whole collection β€” Zebrina, Frydek, lauterbachiana, watsoniana, Black Velvet, and more β€” just sitting outside, enjoying the rainy weather.

Unattended. Unprotected. Unfilmed. I had no one to blame but myself.

The good news: they're back. Slowly, stubbornly, dramatically β€” very on-brand for Alocasia drama.

The collection episode is coming. Someday.

KKB tayo β€” kanya-kanyang bayad. For our Westerner friends, it means we each pay our own way, preferably not spending our rent money!

I would like to remind everyone: we support plant happiness here, but we don't do plant peer pressure. So let me go on record by saying:

(1) I did spend within my means, and

(2) I am not on a plant-buying binge β€” this was purchased 2 months ago 🀣

After a busy few weeks for me and CAP's Garden, the stars finally aligned and I received a haul I'd been so excited about. And honestly, the wait made the feeling so much better.

Like a fine wine. A fine, leafy, epiphytic wine. πŸ€£πŸ™ˆ

Nine Hoyas, one of which doesn't even have a formal name yet β€” just a collector's number. We love an obscure mystery Hoya around here.

Click below to check them out β€” this is one very satisfying unboxing. πŸ’š

πŸ’š Human baby: flowers and a smile
🚨 Fur baby: climbed INTO the Monstera and left me a present there.

Both are my babies. Both are loved. One of the presents just isn't appreciated. 🌸πŸͺ΄πŸ˜πŸ€£

Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms and Plant Moms out there β€” may your babies, fur or otherwise, spare your plants today and always. πŸ™πŸŒΏ

Two Scindapsus. Two strong personalities. One very weak wallet. πŸ˜…πŸ™ˆ

This episode features two special plants from Mic Kael of Leaf Gloss:

πŸ”₯ Cinder Magma β€” a striking Scindapsus cultivar named by Mic himself, with chartreuse variegation that looks like molten lava flowing through dark green channels. The mother plant was revived from a single node after nearly being lost, and after 3+ years of growing, he finally propagated it. And the variegation? Is still stable after all these years!

❄️ Glaucous Ganda (my unofficial nickname for this one because variegated Scindapsus hederaceus NOID is just too long to repeat over and over 🀣) β€” is a cool-toned Scindapsus with a glaucous leaf surface and creamy streaky variegation that gives it an almost painted look. Especially on my friend Kathy's plant

Same genus. Completely different energy.

One is drama. One is elegance. Both are why my self-control no longer exists and my wallet is lighter.

So fair warning, KKB tayo: Kanya-kanyang bayad. Spend within your means. Plant collecting should be fun, not financially traumatic. πŸ˜ŒπŸ™ˆπŸ€£

Paolo asked me what I wanted for my birthday. Like a good beauty pageant contestant, I said "peace." ✌🏻

SO HE GAVE ME A BOUQUET. 🀣 Not a flower bouquet β€” a plant bouquet. 😍

Every single one of these is a living, growing plant delivered together in one giant pot. I told him no flowers for years and this year he finally found a loophole and I have never been more proud of him.πŸ’š

New video is up! 🌿 I also talk about what's in the arrangement in case you want to give one to the plant lover in your life (or drop hints for yourself, I don't judge).

ZZ plants get overlooked a lot -- but look a little closer and you might just find your next obsession 🌿

In this video, I'm walking you through my ZZ plant collection: from the classic glossy green form to the dramatic Raven, a variegated Raven, and even a possible mutated sport I'm still watching closely.

Along the way, we're also covering the etymology of Zamioculcas zamiifolia (yes, we're going there), fun facts about ZZ plant anatomy, and general care that works across all the forms.

If you've been curious about starting a ZZ collection β€” or you already have one and want to geek out β€” this video's for you πŸ‘‡πŸ»

Most plant lovers have been calling ZZ Plant parts by the wrong names β€” and honestly, I did too before I went deep into the research for my latest video! πŸ™ˆ

What you think is a "stem" is actually a compound leaf. Those individual "leaves" are leaflets. And yes, ZZ Plants produce a spathe and spadix β€” just like aroids β€” because they ARE aroids. And don't get me started on the peduncle πŸ˜‚πŸ€―

My inner plant nerd was so inspired by everything I learned that I just had to make this anatomy poster to accompany my ZZ Plant video dropping tomorrow on YouTube. πŸ’š

Save this if you want to sound like a botanist at your next plant get-together or if you're a plant nerd like me! πŸ˜„

Mushy leaves are often dismissed as edema.

But when two leaves on your mutated Philodendron Orange Princess start to soften and collapse like this, it’s worth pausing.

Mindful plant parenting means listening to what the plant is telling you nowβ€”not what worked at the nursery, not what worked for it last month.

Conditions change. Heat builds. Moisture lingers. And our plants respond accordingly. At the end of the day, they reflect the environment we provide.

Sometimes that reflection is growth.
Sometimes it’s a melting leaf.

And both are part of the process.
