❄️ Understanding the Chilled Water Loop in Commercial HVAC Systems

The chilled water loop is a fundamental part of cooling systems used in large commercial buildings such as offices, hospitals, airports, and university campuses. It allows cooling to be generated centrally and distributed efficiently across multiple zones.

🔹 System Objective
The main goal of the chilled water loop is to deliver cooling capacity reliably and efficiently throughout the building while maintaining occupant comfort and optimizing energy consumption.

🔹 Key Components
• Chiller – Acts as the heart of the system, producing chilled water
• Chilled Water Pumps – Maintain required flow rate and system pressure
• Air Handling Units (AHUs) – Serve as heat exchangers where building air is cooled

🔹 How the Cooling Cycle Works
1️⃣ The chiller cools water to approximately 7°C, known as the chilled water supply
2️⃣ This chilled water is circulated to AHUs located throughout the building
3️⃣ Inside the AHU coil, the chilled water absorbs heat from the return air, cooling the air before it is supplied back into occupied spaces
4️⃣ After absorbing heat, the water temperature increases to around 12°C, forming the chilled water return
5️⃣ The warmer water is pumped back to the chiller, where the cycle repeats continuously
