The generally recommended maximum height for a CCTV camera to be placed for effective, detailed surveillance (such as facial recognition) is 8 to 10 feet (approx. 2.5 to 3 meters) above the ground. While higher positions (up to 15 feet or more) can be used for wider, overhead views, they typically result in poorer facial identification.

Key Guidelines for CCTV Installation Height
Optimal Height: 8 to 10 feet (2.5m - 3m) is the "sweet spot" for balancing security, protection from tampering, and image clarity.
Maximum for Identification: For capturing faces, 8–10 feet is recommended. Above 15 feet, it becomes difficult to identify individuals.
For Wide Area Monitoring: In outdoor, industrial, or high-risk scenarios, cameras can be placed 10 to 12 feet (3m - 3.7m) high to cover a larger area and prevent vandalism.
For License Plates: Lower heights (3-4 feet) are often better to avoid glare from headlights, while 12–14 feet may be needed in parking lots, say some sources.
Indoor Height: For indoor, 7-9 feet is recommended for optimal, unobscured views of faces.
Why Height Matters
Too Low (< 7 feet): The camera is vulnerable to tampering, theft, or vandalism.
Too High (> 15 feet): The camera captures the tops of heads, reducing the ability to identify people.
Angle Adjustment: Regardless of height, the camera should be tilted downward at a 15-30 degree angle to reduce sky glare and capture faces properly.
