Elevator/Lift Safety
Automatic Rescue Device (ARD)
An Automatic Rescue Device (ARD) is a safety feature in elevators designed to assist passengers in case of a power outage or other emergency situation. The ARD is a crucial component of an elevator's overall safety system, and its primary function is to lower the elevator to the nearest floor and open the doors to allow passengers to exit safely when there is a loss of power.
Here's how the Automatic Rescue Device works:
Power Failure Detection: When the elevator's control system detects a power outage, whether due to a blackout, electrical failure, or any other reason, it activates the ARD.
Backup Power: Most elevators are equipped with a backup power source, typically a battery, which is used to operate the ARD. This backup power source ensures that the elevator can perform the rescue operation even when the main power supply is interrupted.
Controlled Descent: The ARD initiates a controlled descent of the elevator car to the nearest floor. This descent is typically slower than normal operation, ensuring the safety of passengers on board.
Door Opening: Once the elevator reaches the nearest floor, the ARD system opens the doors, allowing passengers to exit the elevator safely.
Emergency Communication: Elevators with ARD systems often have an emergency communication device, such as an intercom or a phone, that passengers can use to contact building security or emergency personnel if necessary.
The ARD is a critical safety feature because it prevents passengers from being trapped inside an elevator during a power failure. It ensures a safer and more comfortable experience for those using elevators, especially during emergencies. It's important to note that ARD functionality and requirements may vary by region and elevator model, but the overall purpose is to facilitate the safe evacuation of passengers in case of an unexpected power outage or other emergency situations.
