Hiking Adventure from Tallinn to Lisbon! Europe is a beautiful continent, rich in history, culture and natural diversity. That’s why we walk.

There is so much more to see than capitals and tourist attractions and we want to discover that. We want to experience how landscape, language, culture, and food slowly change; see small villages, everyday life, natural reserves. The European long distance path E9 seems perfect for our adventure. We will walk 5200km from Tallinn to Sagres, crossing 12 countries from the North to the very South of

Europe, following the coastline of the Baltic Sea, North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. During one year, we want to hike 20-25 km a day, stop a few days where we like it more, and enjoy the scenery, new encounters and plenty of time for ourselves. Our eyes and minds won’t be focused only on the sea. The land will be at least as interesting, as it is here where will meet new people, savour the landscape and experience local life and culture. On our blog we will share this adventure with you!

June 11, 2016 – Carcavelos-LISBOA!: 23km (408)
Lisbon ahoy! Our last hiking day was incredibly special, with old and new friends, family from Germany and Portugal joining us for a beautiful walk along the river Tagus. Upon our arrival in downtown Lisbon, we celebrated the end of one journey and the beginning of a new chapter in our lives.
Lisboa à vista! Nosso último dia de caminhada foi incrivelmente especial, com amigos antigos e novos, família da Alemanha e de Portugal a juntarem-se para um lindo passeio às margens do Tejo. Quando chegámos à Baixa de Lisboa, comemorámos o fim de uma viagem e o início de uma nova etapa das nossas vidas.
Lissabon in Sicht! Unser letzter Wandertag war etwas ganz Besonderes, mit alten und neuen Freunden, Familie aus Deutschland und Portugal, die mit uns einen schönen Spaziergang entlang des Tejo Flusses machten. Als wir im Zentrum von Lissabon ankamen, feierten wir das Ende einer Reise und den Beginn eines neuen Lebensabschnitts.

June 10, 2016 – Cascais-Carcavelos: 13km (407)
So close to Lisbon, yet one full hiking day away: The charming bay of Cascais.
Tão perto de Lisboa, mas ainda a um dia inteiro de caminhada de distância: A encantadora baía de Cascais.
So nah an Lissabon, aber immer noch einen ganzen Wandertag entfernt: Die bezaubernde Bucht von Cascais.

June 09, 2016 – PraiaDasMaçãs-Cascais: 27km (406)
Just when we thought nothing could shock us anymore, we made this beautiful, but extremely strenuous hike up and down the hills of the Natural Reserve of Sintra-Cascais.
Quando pensávamos que nada mais pudesse nos chocar, fizemos esta linda, mas extremamente cansativa caminhada a subir e a descer as colinas do Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais.
Als wir dachten, dass uns nicht mehr schocken könnte, machten wir diese wunderschöne, aber extrem anstrengende Wanderung auf und ab die Hügel im Naturpark Sintra-Cascais.

June 08, 2016 – Ericeira-PraiaDasMaçãs: 27km (405)
Sometimes it is a good idea to look back during the hike – otherwise, we would have missed this stunning view of Azenhas do Mar. Fun fact: We had bought an art print of this view many years earlier.
Às vezes é uma boa ideia olhar para trás durante a caminhada – senão teríamos perdido esta vista deslumbrante de Azenhas do Mar. Facto curioso: Tínhamos comprado uma gravura desta vista muitos anos antes.
Manchmal ist es eine gute Idee, während der Wanderung zurückzuschauen – sonst hätten wir diesen herrlichen Blick auf Azenhas do Mar verpasst. Kurioser Fakt: Wir hatten vor vielen Jahren einen Kunstdruck dieser Aussicht gekauft.

June 07, 2016 – Ribamar-Ericeira: 8km (404)
This was a short hiking day, on which we met up with great friends. In Ericeira, we were fascinated by this fearless fisherman.
Este foi um dia curto de caminhada, em que nos encontrámos com bons amigos. Na Ericeira, ficamos fascinados com este pescador sem medo.
Dies war ein kurzer Wandertag, an dem wir uns mit guten Freunden trafen. In Ericeira schauten wir fasziniert diesem furchtlosen Angler zu.

June 05, 2016 – PraiaDaAreiaBranca-SantaCruz: 22km (402)
Portuguese windmills are a charming relict of the past. Some are 300 years old and not all are so well maintained like this one. Just put the sails on and it can grind flour again.
Os moinhos de vento portugueses são uma relíquia charmosa do passado. Alguns têm 300 anos e nem todos são tão bem conservados como este. É só montar as velas e ele volta a moer farinha.
Die portugiesischen Windmühlen sind ein charmantes Relikt aus der Vergangenheit. Einige sind 300 Jahre alt und nicht alle sind so gut erhalten wie diese. Nur noch die Segel montieren, und sie mahlt wieder Mehl.

June 04, 2016 – Peniche-PraiaDaAreiaBranca: 23km (401)
We have been very creative in finding ways to hike along the European coast. Seeing a sign that shows that we are actually following the European long-distance path E9, always makes us happy.
Fomos muito criativos para encontrar trilhos junto à costa europeia. Ver uma sinalização que indica que estamos de facto seguindo o caminho europeu de longa distância E9, sempre nos deixa muito felizes.
Wir waren sehr erfindungsreich, um Wanderwege entlang der europäischen Küste zu finden. Wenn wir ein Schild sehen, das zeigt, dass wir tatsächlich dem europäischen Fernwanderweg E9 folgen, macht uns das immer sehr glücklich.

June 03, 2016 – FozDoArelho-Peniche: 20km (400)
Do you notice something? This small stretch of sand between the cliff and the sea would disappear one hour later, making it impossible to take this beautiful path. The turn of the tide becomes an important factor when you walk at the coast.
Notam alguma coisa? Esta estreita faixa de areia entre a falésia e o mar desapareceria uma hora mais tarde, deixando impossível caminhar neste trilho lindo. A mudança das marés passa a ser um fator importante quando caminhamos na costa.
Merkt ihr etwas? Dieser schmale Streifen Sand zwischen dem Felsen und dem Meer wäre eine Stunde später verschwunden, was das Laufen auf diesem schönen Weg unmöglich macht. Der Gezeitenwechsel wird ein wichtiger Faktor, wenn man an der Küste wandert.

One imagines that a costal hike is always flat. We have climbed so many hills during our trip - not the most fun thing to do, but totally rewarded by the magnificent views.
Imagina-se que uma caminhada na costa é sempre plana. Nós subimos tantas colinas durante a nossa viagem - não é a coisa mais divertida, mas é totalmente recompensado pelas vistas magníficas.
Man stellt sich vor, dass Küstenwanderungen immer flach sind. Wir sind während unserer Reise so viele Hügel hinaufgestiegen – das macht zwar nicht den meisten Spaß, wird aber von den herrlichen Aussichten völlig wettgemacht.

Portuguese beaches are paradise on earth. Pity that they are always so crowded!
As praias portuguesas são o paraíso na terra. Pena que sempre estão tão cheias!
Die portugiesischen Strände sind das Paradies auf Erden. Schade, dass sie immer so überfüllt sind!
