GROWING GIANT POINTED CABBAGE 🥬 This is one of those vegetables that always makes me stop and smile in the garden. Filderkraut can grow into enormous pointed heads, and I love both the look of it and the flavor.

Even after a few frosty nights, the plants can still look surprisingly good. I share what has worked best for me and why mulching has made such a difference.

Since there are still a few weeks before my garlic goes into the ground, I’ve covered the soil with a light layer of grass clippings. It helps retain moisture in the soil and gives the earthworms something to feed on. But the layer isn’t thick enough to keep the soil warm. Right now, I actually want the soil to cool down so it’ll be the right time to plant the garlic. 🧄

THE FIRST FROST IS COMMING
The first frost is in the forecast, and there is plenty to do in my Swedish vegetable garden before it arrives. This week, several tons of garlic are delivered, and I harvest tomatoes from the garden to preserve for winter.

Between all the work, there is time for a quiet evening by the lake, knitting while my son is fishing — one of those simple moments I love about this time of year.

A busy week with frost in the weather forecast, some tons of garlic...

WHAT I SOW IN OCTOBER 🌱 October doesn’t mean the end of sowing in my garden. Some seeds go outside, some into the polytunnel, and a few end up on the windowsill.

At this time of year, I start thinking just as much about the months ahead as the harvests I can still get now. A few well-timed sowings can make a surprising difference later on in the year.

Come see what I’m sowing in October.

GARLIC SEASON IS COMING UP🧄 Garlic is one of those crops I simply don’t want to be without. I plant it in fall, then leave the cloves in the ground through winter and wait for them to take off again in spring.

The exact time to start planting them depends on where you live, but there are a few things I always keep in mind when I prepare my garlic for the colder months.

Here are my best tips for planting garlic in fall.

So happy with my raspberries right now ❤️ They’re producing beautiful berries, and I have three plants growing in each large container. Sweet, delicious, and so lovely in my little kitchen garden on the hill.

HOW TO PROPAGATE FIGS 🌿 Figs feel almost a little exotic to grow this far north, which might be why I enjoy them so much. The good news is that getting more plants from the one you already have can be surprisingly simple.

I use cuttings to make new plants and have tried a few different ways depending on the season.

🥰Today I give a shout-out to my parents for teaching my siblings and me the art of taking days off when everyone else is at work. That means plenty of time for mushroom picking.
In return, you end up working until midnight while everyone else is asleep. Ha ha ha!😂
