Nana Coffee Roasters – Central Westville Branch, designed by IDIN Architects, finds a compact 150 sqm space and turns it into an experience that navigates the visitor through a journey of caves in keeping with the brand story of finding ”light at the end of the tunnel.”

Interior, graphic, and architectural design all come together to create an immersive, storytelling experience.

Architectural Highlights:
Concept & Form:
Inspired by caving, nested, layered forms (”space within space”) to wander and discover.
Waffle fabrication in dark, textured tones mimics the surface texture of natural stone.
Well-concealed lighting emphasizes the main foyer and junctures between spaces.

Structure & Materials:
Wavy stone veneer exterior moves with light and darkness.
Interior hues are limited to a unifying gray, black, copper, and timber palette.

Spatial Experience:
Mezzanine floor offers individual seating and group spaces, with white-painted walls symbolizing the ”start of civilization.”
Furniture shaped organically matches the curvaceous interior volumes.

Installations & Structures

Chengdu, China
Architects: Studio Dali Architects
Area: 345 m²
Year: 2024
Photographs:Arch-Exist

This structure is located at the gateway of a Sichuan, China, agricultural-themed residential community and is inspired by banyan trees.
The structure is a semi-open, multifunctional facility that accommodates music performances, theater, outdoor lessons, quiet reflection, and informal social gatherings.

Architectural Highlights:

A few skylights introduce natural light and provide a means for trees to grow through the roof.
Natural acoustics that are suitable for live performances.
Thin columns that are inspired by banyan aerial roots, inviting physical touch.
Integrated harmoniously with nature—the hill, lake views, and indigenous trees—without dominating the landscape.

Form & Structure:
Light and organic steel-wood dome, implying warmth and protection.
The domed roof is clad with crossing wooden beams on a 60-degree angle.
24 thin, chrome-plated steel columns (60–100 mm diameter) support the roof, creating an illusion of lightness and suspension.
Gravel-filled column bases allow natural drainage and integrate the building with the ground.

Location: Munich, Germany
Time: 2016–2017
Size: 5,000m² (GFA)
Client: APASSIONATA Park München GmbH & Co.KG
Photos; Stefan Müller-Naumann and EQUILA

After winning the first prize in the competition for the APASSIONATA Park in 2013 and about twelve months of construction, GRAFT implemented the first building, the APASSIONATA show palace in 2017. Located in the district of Fröttmaning, right next to the Allianz Arena in Munich, the project will create an interactive adventure for the visitors on the theme of horses with twelve additional pavilions.

The front of the show palace is constructed with a wooden façade, which is brought to life by an underlying light installation every evening. The overall shape of the façade abstracts the dynamic of free running horses and creates one more illusory show effect for the visitors. The show palace with its visually powerful theatre world is the centrepiece of the park and creates a symbiotic relationship between the architecture and the surrounding landscape, between nature and art world.

Sun Tower is special as a building typology, it is a cultural “lighthouse” where ancient wisdom in respecting nature is integrated with contemporary urban cultural life. The architecture frames and transforms invisible energies—air, light, sound, and natural phenomena—into tangible and visceral experiences, allowing people to establish moments of connection with the universe and otherwise endless cycles of nature.
The building features shell structure. Two layers of white concrete shells form the main body, connected and braced by slabs and ramps. Facing the ocean, the concave inner shell of the building acts as a sound collector, absorbing and amplifying sounds from the sea. At its base is a semi-outdoor theater which also serves as a place for relaxation and sea observation. A smaller upside-down shell atop the inner shell houses the library and the Phenomena Space. The library offers both traditional and digital books. Reading under the sky and above the sea is a very unique experience.

Area: 10280 m²
Year: 2024

The large greenhouse in the Meise Botanical Garden is somewhat hidden and tucked away in a rolling area. The structure is surrounded by trees, behind the Pachthof and next to the service building, in the heart of the garden. The conservatory houses a precious and extensive live plant collection with species from climatic regions around the world.
The vault of the iconic pavilion midway between the conservatories has the shape of a hyperbolic paraboloid. It is twelve meters high and spread over two floors. On the second floor is the terrace with the pavilion’s roof in the center. This gives the visitor a beautiful view of the roof where preserved softwood was reused and transformed into wooden slats that cover the volume like a skin, almost like an animal.

Cultural Architecture,Shopping Centers
Location: Qingdao, China
Architects: Society Particular - SOPA .particular
Area: 1000 m²
Year: 2023

Concept: This project redefines the relationship between department stores and their urban context.Through SKYBOWL, the design team at Society Particular (SOPA) demonstrates how innovative design can create more equitable and inclusive urban environments while achieving commercial success.

Material: The use of recycled EPDM particles for the roof covering promotes sustainability and reduces maintenance. The corten-clad door frames and local stone facade echo the surrounding landscape, while also enhancing durability against the warm climate.

SKYBOWL, a rooftop amphitheater on the Hisense Mall, serves as a public gathering space, cultural stage, and free performance platform. The design ensures unobstructed bay views and fosters an inclusive atmosphere. VIP guests enjoy a light-filled hall beneath the amphitheater, while the public can access the rooftop without disruption.

A Different Definition of the Ocean in Architecture
Wave-shaped Bricks in a Cinema

The use of the ocean concept with bricks in the interior of a cinema, inspired by local geography and designed by One Plus Partnership architects, challenges all clichés associated with the ocean theme. This cinema uniquely combines functionality with aesthetics.
Sunlight streams in through the cinema’s sparse windows, enhancing the vibrant atmosphere. The bricks, precisely positioned to mimic waves, vary in length and angle, creating dynamic visuals from every perspective. The space features wave-inspired tables, chairs, and benches, all with organic, flowing curves.
The design harmoniously combines beauty and functionality, ensuring a memorable and safe experience for guests.
What do you think of this project? Does it represent a new and innovative approach?
