Financial Well-being EP.5

Building an Emergency Fund
A Financial Safety Net for Unexpected Events
Life can bring situations we are not prepared for, such as illness, accidents, car repairs, reduced income, job loss, or urgent family expenses. Without emergency savings, we may need to rely on credit cards, borrow money, or use funds intended for important goals, which can lead to long-term debt.
An emergency fund is money set aside specifically for necessary and unexpected situations. It is not intended for travel, impulse purchases, entertainment, or ordinary daily expenses.
How Much Should You Save?
As a general guideline, your emergency fund should cover approximately 3–6 months of essential expenses.
For example, if your essential monthly expenses are 15,000 baht, your emergency fund target should be approximately:
45,000–90,000 baht
People with irregular income, significant family responsibilities, or only one main household income may consider saving more than six months of essential expenses for greater financial security.
Include Only Essential Expenses
When calculating your emergency fund, include the expenses necessary to maintain your daily life, such as:
Basic food expenses
Rent or mortgage payments
Transportation to work
Essential water, electricity, and phone bills
Medical and insurance expenses
Education or family-related costs
Scheduled debt repayments
Entertainment and other discretionary expenses do not need to be fully included, as some spending can usually be reduced during an emergency.
How to Start Building an Emergency Fund
1. Set a Clear Target
Calculate your essential monthly expenses and multiply them by the number of months you want to cover.
For example:
15,000 baht × 6 months = 90,000 baht
Your emergency fund target would therefore be 90,000 baht.
2. Begin with a Smaller Milestone
If the full target feels too difficult, begin with a smaller goal, such as 10,000 baht or one month of essential expenses. Once you reach that amount, gradually increase your target step by step.
3. Save as Soon as You Receive Your Income
Apply the “Pay Yourself First” principle by transferring money into your emergency fund on payday. Even saving only 500 or 1,000 baht per month is better than waiting to see what remains at the end of the month.
4. Use Additional Income to Reach Your Goal Faster
Bonuses, overtime pay, tax refunds, and income from side jobs can be partially allocated to your emergency fund. This can help you reach your target more quickly.
5. Keep the Fund in a Separate Account
Your emergency savings should be kept separately from your everyday spending account. This reduces the risk of using the money for non-emergency purposes.
Where Should You Keep the Money?
An emergency fund should be kept somewhere that is:
Easy to access when genuinely needed
Low risk
Stable in value
Separate from everyday spending money
Avoid placing the entire emergency fund in highly volatile investments. If an emergency occurs, you may be forced to sell the investment when its value has fallen.
When Should You Use the Emergency Fund?
The money should be used only when the situation is:
Truly necessary
Unexpected
Urgent
Too expensive to cover from your normal monthly budget
Examples include urgent medical expenses, temporary loss of income, essential home or vehicle repairs, or emergency family travel.
Before withdrawing the money, ask yourself:
“Is this necessary, urgent, unexpected, and unable to wait?”
Rebuild the Fund After Using It
After using part of your emergency fund, make a plan to restore it to its previous level as soon as possible. You may temporarily reduce some discretionary expenses or use part of your next bonus or additional income to refill the fund.
Using emergency savings during a genuine emergency is not a failure. It means the fund has served the purpose for which it was created.
An Emergency Fund Is Not the Same as Other Savings
Emergency savings should be kept separate from money intended for:
Travel
Buying a house or car
Children’s education
Investments
Retirement
Each financial goal has a different purpose and timeframe. Mixing these funds may leave you without enough accessible money when a real emergency occurs.
An emergency fund may not make you wealthy immediately, but it can help you get through difficult situations without creating additional debt.
Start with a small amount and save consistently. Financial security does not come from never facing problems—it comes from being prepared when problems arise. 💙
