This is my Great Grandpa Charlie’s home in Southern Utah. My Grandpa Keith, who was also in the window/glass business (among other things), built this home for my Great Grandparents in the mid-1960’s. Shortly after they moved in, Great Grandma became ill and passed away. I’m told that after she passed, Grandpa Charlie didn’t want to live there without her and never fully moved in. Grandpa Charlie passed away when I was 8-years old. I remember him as being quiet and kind. My grandparents lived in the home for a short period of time in the late 80’s through the early 90’s but the home has mostly been unoccupied. Grandpa passed last year and the home remains in the family. I’ve done a few projects over the years for my Grandpa. He was always good company and was often there when I started the day and didn’t leave until I turned out the lights. I replaced the windows in March. It didn’t feel like work. Instead I felt a sense of comfort and peace. A good friend from the St. George area helped with the siding.

I finished this today. We removed all of the existing 2 3/4” base and 2” casing. Repurposed an IKEA chest of drawers and build it into their closet. Installed new 3” R&G molding around the doors and windows and 5” base around the room. Shiplap trim was installed in the dormer. A butcher block slab cut to fit in the dormer for a changing table / desk.

Faulty raingutter, exposure, and time ruined the jamb on this exterior door.

Take a look at the existing door frame. It matters what type of material is used on an exterior application. MDF (Medium-density fiberboard) is NOT recommended. The MDF broke down, the seal failed, and moisture crept back into the home.

As a replacement, the homeowner chose to install a French door with internal blinds between the glass panes. PThe louvers are fully adjustable with the operating mechanism integrated into the door/glass. The replacement door with the additional glass, allowed more natural light into the basement.

After we replaced the door and removed the damaged drywall, we installed pre-primed pine on the exterior and sealed it to the brick. We custom bent an aluminum wrap that covers the pine and fastened it to the new jamb. The drywall was replaced and new interior trim installed.

The aluminum is manufactured in multiple colors and baked on at the factory. There are a couple of upsides to installing aluminum over your exterior wood trim. The aluminum acts as an additional protective layer (instead of paint), and... you won’t need to paint the jamb. Ever. 😎 The downside? It dents, and will scratch if you are not careful. ’tbeabullinachinacabinet
