September is the peak of hurricane season on the Gulf Coast. Good week to walk your screen enclosure and check the spline — that's the rubber cord pressed into the frame channel that holds the mesh tight.

Push on a panel with your palm. If the mesh shifts in the channel, or you can see the spline sitting proud of the groove, wind will find that spot first. One loose panel is usually what turns into three.

While you're out there, check the screws at the beam connections for any that have backed out.

Late August is when the back patio stops being usable before noon.

The fix isn't a bigger umbrella. An insulated patio cover puts a real roof over the slab, and the difference between open shade and an insulated panel is roughly the difference between standing under a tree and standing indoors. Add a screen room and you get the same shade without the mosquitoes.

Now is a reasonable time to start. Design, engineering, and permitting take a few weeks before anyone shows up with material, so the projects that start conversations in August are the ones ready for the good weather in October and November.

A question we get a lot: why aluminum instead of wood?

Wood looks great on day one. On the Gulf Coast it spends the next few years absorbing humidity, moving with it, and giving termites somewhere to live. Every few seasons it wants scraping, sealing, and repainting.

Aluminum doesn't rot, doesn't feed insects, and doesn't swell shut in August. It's also light enough for its strength to span farther, which is how you get a patio cover with no post planted in the middle of the slab.

The part that matters more than the material: every structure we build is engineered to the wind-load requirements for your specific address, and we handle the permitting. That's what stands behind the finished product.

Three things worth checking this week:

Clear the gutters and downspouts around the enclosure. Standing water backs up fast in a Gulf Coast downpour and puts weight where the frame wasn't designed to carry it.

Walk the panels and look at the spline — the rubber cord seated in the frame track that holds the screen. A panel already lifting at one corner is the one that goes first.

Bring in anything that isn't bolted down. Patio furniture and grills do more damage from the inside than the wind does.
