Fidler and family established the very first U.S. Dry Ice Blasting Service Company and they're still leaders in the industry today. Universal Dry Ice Blasting is a Nationwide Dry Ice Blasting Service Contractor with 29-years of Dry Ice Blast cleaning experience in a multitude of industrial settings, from power generation to commercial ovens. Dry ice blasting is known by several names: dry ice blas

ting, dry ice cleaning, CO2 blasting, dry ice dusting, and even environmentally sustainable cleaning. Dry ice blasting is an efficient and cost-effective way for industries to maximize production capability and quality. Dry ice blasting is similar to sandblasting, plastic bead blasting, or soda blasting where media is accelerated in a pressurized air stream to impact a surface to be cleaned or prepared. But that's where the similarity ends. Instead of using hard abrasive media to grind on a surface (and damage it), dry ice blasting uses soft dry ice, accelerated at supersonic speeds, and creates mini-explosions on the surface to lift the undesirable item off the underlying substrate. Dry ice blasting is a dry process that is nonabrasive and does not create any secondary waste. Hydroelectric Generator Cleaning:

We clean Hydroelectric Generators using the Dry Ice Blasting process. My Father, brother, and I began cleaning generators for SCE at Big Creek for Engineer Don Frapwell. Don taught us how to clean generators thoroughly to help increase Megger readings and prolong healthy stator core temperatures. One major issue that we faced while cleaning these Gentle Giants were clogged Air-Ventilation Channels and Stator Iron. We used bottle brushes on the air vents while the rotor was still in the unit. My brother and I were shoulders deep in the unit with our faces pressed against the spider wheel cooling ring while poking each individual air vents; (There are only about 10,000 air vents per unit?) My brother said, "There has got to be a better way!"

We Industrialized our Ice Blaster. We increased the air and ice volume output on our Dry Ice Blasting machines to cover more area faster; We also engineered a special process that allows us to clean air-ventilation channels, the stators core, and iron on most hydroelectric generators with the rotor in place! Cleaning with the rotor in place saves companies so much money on the time and man-hours it takes to pull the rotor and reassemble. We are the only company that can successfully clean with the rotor in the unit. No longer do you have to wait for your 10-year rotor pull to clean a filthy unit. Since 1998 we have cleaned and painted over 300 hydroelectric generators using this process, and today, Dry Ice Blasting is the number one generator cleaning process in the world. Universal Dry Ice Blasting provides on-site industrial cleaning services for the following:

We are cleaning Stator Air-Cooling Ventilation Channels with the Rotor in Place on a 1913 Hydroelectric Generator. This is a view from the inspection window.

Clogged ventilation channels are the leading cause of overheating. The rule of thumb is for every 10°C over recommended running temperature will reduce winding life by 50%.
