On this monumental day, we want to pay special tribute to those enslaved individuals that made great contributions to the construction industry. To the left is Henry Taylor, who while enslaved, helped construct Bellamy Mansion in Wilmington, NC. He later went on to build his family home where he and his wife Emily raised their 4 children. One of their children, Robert (to the right), became the first black graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well at the first accredited black architect in the United States. Robert went on to have an extensive career as professor and architect at Tuskegee Institute, having designed many of the buildings there.
