Does homemade w**d killer/vinegar actually work??

TLDR: not permanently. It will kill the vegetation and tops but will not kill the root of a w**d. It still has many risks when using and isn’t kid or pet friendly, especially the horticultural stuff. It’ll slow the roll of the w**ds but won’t eradicate them.

You might think we’re just money hungry plant janitors when we refuse to “cut it shorter”.

We get why you’d think that, but that’s not actually why. We make plenty of money the honest way. ;)

To be fair, there are some grasses in warmer climates such as Bermuda that actually love being cut to 1.5 or 2”.

But we live in the PNW. Our grasses are exclusively “cool season grass”. This includes turf type tall fescue, Kentucky blue and perennial rye. They HATE being cut super short.

These grasses are meant to be kept at a length of around 3”, give or take a half inch. When they’re kept at this height they can grow a robust and healthy root system, leaving them more resilient to fight off insects, disease and w**ds from taking over.

Cutting these grasses too short forces the plant to go into repair mode to grow back the missing blade, tapping into precious energy reserves that it should be using to build it’s root system to become bulletproof to harsh weather and environmental attacks.

Beyond that, cutting your grass as short as possible drastically increases the likelihood of scalping the grass and leaving ugly brown bare spots in your lawn, which have exactly zero curb appeal. It also leaves an open invitation for w**ds to move in.

So the next time you ask us to cut your lawn shorter and we politely decline, know that it’s because the answer to rapid grass growth isn’t to cut it shorter, it’s to cut it more often. 💚
