Here is a fun tree related fact!

You might see this strange, round bump on an oak tree and think it's a disease.

But hiding inside is the secret to human history.

Meet Oak Gall Ink.

Long before modern pens faded and smeared, our ancestors foraged these specific wasp nests.

They used them to create an incredibly permanent, waterproof liquid.

This traditional heritage utility was so powerful, it was used to write the Declaration of Independence.

The natural tannins bind instantly to paper, ensuring your words maintain their vitality for centuries.

It never washes away.

Save this post to learn the lost skill of making permanent forest ink.

🌳 **Fruit Tree Grafting Basics**

Grafting is the process of joining a piece of one fruit tree onto another so they grow as one. It’s how we preserve and reproduce specific apple, pear, peach, and other fruit varieties.

**What is a scion?**
A scion is a cutting from last year’s growth that determines the fruit variety after grafting.

**Best scion wood:**
• One-year-old wood
• Pencil thickness (¼"–⅜")
• Healthy, disease-free shoots

**When to collect:** NOW
Late winter during full dormancy (before buds swell).

**How to store:**
Wrap in slightly damp paper towel, seal in a bag, and refrigerate at 34–38°F until spring.

**When to graft:**
Early spring when buds begin swelling and the rootstock is waking up.

Grafting is a great way to preserve heirloom trees, repair damage, or add new varieties to your orchard and allows you to grow multiple varieties on a single tree.

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is an invasive, metallic emerald-green beetle native to Asia that attacks and kills ash trees. It was first discovered in the U.S. in 2002 near Detroit, Michigan, likely brought over in wooden shipping materials. Since then, it has spread across much of the country, killing millions of ash trees. The larvae feed beneath the bark, disrupting water and nutrient flow and often killing an untreated tree within 2–5 years. Signs of infestation include the adult beetle’s D-shaped exit holes, peeling or splitting bark, canopy dieback, and small shoots or sprouts growing from the trunk as the tree struggles to survive. Inspect your ash trees regularly. Treatment is possible if caught early, and infestation can be prevented by yearly application of insecticide.
