A Locator is the eyes and ears of an HDD crew.

While the drill head is underground, the Locator walks above ground with a tracking receiver, monitoring its depth, direction, and position in real time. They communicate with the drill operator to help keep the bore on the right path, avoid existing underground utilities, and make sure the installation goes where it’s supposed to.

Basically, the drill is underground. The Locator is making sure it knows where it’s going. 😎

Did you know drilling mud has a job? In horizontal directional drilling, drilling fluid is doing some serious underground work. It helps cool and lubricate the drill head, carry soil cuttings back out of the bore, and help stabilize the hole as we drill.

So while it might look like a muddy mess, there’s a lot more going on beneath the surface. 😉
