As one progresses spiritually the role of ego reduces. But how do we conduct ourselves when we are surrounded by people with egos? This parable illustrates.

To my many friends, clients and allies - thank you very much for your support and appreciation for the 'real' masonry trade and my abilities to serve the region with stone and brick masonry and other old world arts and crafts. I have relied upon you and am grateful for your belief in me and helping me advertise with your 'word of mouth'. While there is a part of me that likes to do this work, I have really missed the conservation world. I am thrilled to report that I will be going to work for Trout Unlimited as their Southern Appalachian Stream Restoration Manager. I start on April 17th. The only masonry I plan to do from this point forward is for myself and my family at the farm. First up is a Scottish Blackhouse that will serve as a library AND hospitality house for people coming to buy berries, pumpkins or Christmas trees from the Browns. Come see us sometime!

Here is a patio and retaining wall I built this past fall for Brian and Sarah Bair in west Asheville. Many thanks to them and Walter Mize of Whistlepig Construction for recommending me. Only now getting time to take some photos. Let me know if you need one!

Just finished up a very large double fireplace (back to back; one inside and one outside) over 30 feet tall for my new friends David and Anne Faust who live on 200 acres outside of Liberty, NC. We built the guts and all out of the fieldstone collected on their property. This was real 'old world arts and crafts'. Many thanks to my buddies Ron Stahoviak and Curtis Sanders for helping me make it happen! And thanks to David and Anne for appreciating this kind of authentic work and hiring us to do it! Here are some of the photos.

Two sets of stone staircases, blacksmithed hand railings, pizza oven and wood fired grill with storage. Many thanks to my new good friends Carson Lucci and Eric Burleson from Over Easy Cafe in downtown Asheville. Eat there! You will be more than satisfied.

It was a very busy 2016. Here is the beginning of a lot of stuff I want to show off. From pizza ovens and wood fired grills to real, wood-burning fireplaces. With a few retaining walls, boulder steps and patios thrown in for good measure. Stay tuned!

I've got about 12 yards of fill dirt that needs a good home. Anybody need a big hole to fill? Its got rocks in it, so its not topsoil. But great for filling in some area. Please call 828-674-8954 and let me know. I would like to haul it away on Monday October 31.

I believe in the need for government. I believe that there is a place for zoning and planning and rules. I also think that the government can overreach and create one-size fits all regulations that are unnecessary and counterproductive. Eustace is an old friend of mine. Perhaps he does need to upgrade some things (I don't know for sure) to make them safer. But I always liked what he was doing out here and I get the sense that he is being unfairly targeted. There is room for him, his way and what he teaches. In fact, I would go so far as to say that smart phones are more dangerous than his buildings, but is the government doing anything about them? Check out this story and the video that goes with it.

Another Self Reliant Offgrider has been targeted by Government Officials. Eustace Conway, who was featured on featured on The History Channel’s “Mountain Men“, and has been teaching people to live of the land for over 20 years, has been forced to close his nature school....
