A huge thank you to Meghan Simmons with Gaskins + LeCraw for treating Shirean, Jeremy, and Savanna to an exciting evening of baseball. The weather was a bit chilly, but the Braves played a great game against the Phillies!

At this month’s 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺, our team gained valuable insights into Pre-Construction thanks to Ron Thompson’s expertise. From understanding key responsibilities and tools to navigating submittals, contracts, and construction schedules, we explored how critical pre-construction planning sets every project up for success.

Discussions covered essential topics like insurance & bonds, subcontractor coordination, OAC meetings, and payment applications—reinforcing the importance of clear communication and strong processes before breaking ground.

This 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵, we celebrate Lina Bo Bardi, a pioneering architect whose visionary work reshaped modern design. Known for her deep commitment to blending architecture with social purpose, Bo Bardi championed designs that prioritized community and cultural connection.

Her iconic works, such as the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) and SESC Pompéia, stand as lasting examples of how architecture can enrich lives and empower communities. At Foley Design we’re inspired by her legacy as we continue to design spaces that foster connection and elevate human experience.

In this month’s Foley Forum, Taylor Pounds took us on a deep dive into contours in site design—a critical skill for shaping the land with purpose and precision.

We explored:
🔹 Reading & Interpreting Contour Lines – Understanding slope, elevation, and topography
🔹 Grading Strategies – Designing for accessibility, drainage, and site function
🔹 Cut, Fill & Balance – Efficient earthwork planning for sustainable development
🔹 Real-World Applications – How we apply these principles to our projects

By mastering these site design fundamentals with our internal training program, our multi-disciplinary team is able to be more resourceful to our clients.

𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀
Rosenwald Schools played a transformative role in educating African American children across the rural South during the 20th century. These schools, funded by philanthropist Julius Rosenwald in partnership with Booker T. Washington, symbolize the power of community and the fight for equity. Over 5,000 schools were built, providing vital opportunities for education and progress.

𝗔𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗰 𝗮𝘁 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗻, 𝗚𝗔, 𝘄𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗯𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝟭𝟵𝟰𝟵 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹. Once a place of learning, this space will soon serve as a Community Center for our new affordable housing project, continuing its mission to uplift and unite. The new apartment buildings will create 166 units spread over two sites and is planned to start construction at the end of next month.

This project, led by Quest CDC and The Integral Group, goes beyond housing—𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀.

🔹 AFFORDABLE LIVING – All units are reserved for households earning 30% to 80% AMI, ensuring accessibility for those who need it most.

🔹 SUPPORTIVE SERVICES – Quest is committed to empowering residents through job training, financial literacy programs, and access to essential services.

Paul Revere Williams – Designing Dreams (1894-1980)

This Black History Month, with the theme of Labor, we highlight Paul Revere Williams, an architect whose labor shaped the skylines of Los Angeles and beyond.

Williams, the first African American architect certified west of the Mississippi, overcame immense barriers to design over 3,000 structures, including celebrity homes and iconic landmarks like the Theme Building at LAX. He famously learned to draw upside down to make clients feel comfortable during meetings—a testament to his resilience and creativity.

Paul Revere Williams’ legacy celebrates the labor of creating beauty, innovation, and inclusivity in the architectural world.
