Tearing off a cedar shake roof isn’t just a demo job — it’s the foundation for a long-lasting install.
Here’s how we properly remove and prep for a new heavy cedar wood shake system:
Full Tear-Off: We remove all existing cedar shakes down to the decking — no shortcuts, no overlays.
Decking Inspection: Every sheet of decking is inspected for rot, delamination, or soft spots. Any compromised decking is replaced to ensure a solid nailing surface.
Ventilation Check: We verify intake and exhaust ventilation to support the weight and longevity of a heavy cedar shake roof.
Debris & Fastener Removal: All old nails, felt, and debris are cleared so the surface is clean and flush.
Upgraded Underlayment System: For heavy cedar shake, we install the proper underlayment system (an ice & water barrier in valleys and penetrations, plus synthetic underlayment and felt interlayment).
Flashing Replacement: All valleys, step flashing, pipe boots, and metal details are replaced — never reused.
A heavy cedar shake roof is a premium system. The prep work determines how it performs for decades.
Quality tear-off = Quality install.
