Did you know that your favorite pomegranate fruit started off as an attractive red flower?

A pomegranate tree generally produces both fertile bisexual (vase-shaped) flowers that set fruit and sterile male (bell-shaped) flowers with reduced pistils.
The stamens from the male flowers help pollinate the fertile flowers (also called hermaphrodite or perfect flowers) before dropping off, eventually turning into fruit.

Oh, and hummingbirds absolutely LOVE the tubular pomegranate flowers - one more reason to plant them!

If you find a hornworm on your tomato plant, you might probably want to get rid of it. Even though they are not harmful to humans, they can completely defoliate an entire plant in a day or two by devouring the leaves.

Tomato hornworm (blue horn) and to***co hornworm (reddish yellow horn) are the two most common types.
They feed on the nightshade plant family which includes tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and potatoes.

Simply pick them off by hand and drop them into a bucket of soapy water or squish them. You can also spray plants with organic Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) to stop them safely.

Helping feijoa make more (fruit) babies!

Feijoa (Acca sellowiana) flowers lack nectar, so they attract bird and insect pollinators using their sweet, edible petals. As these animals feed, they inadvertently brush pollen from the male stamens to the female stigma.
Wind is not effective for this pollen transfer, so we can do it ourselves!
While some varieties can self-pollinate, cross-pollination among multiple cultivars is even more effective.

Feijoa (or pineapple guava) also makes an excellent ornamental plant for your yard. A very low maintenance and disease resistant shrub, it can also be used as an evergreen hedge. And if that wasn't enough, it rewards you with sweet flowers and tropical tasting fruit with notes of pineapple, guava, and strawberry.

Even though grapes and apples are equally challenging to grow in the southeast (very disease prone), there is one exception - muscadines!

Muscadine grapes are native to the southeast, which means they absolutely thrive in our heat, humidity, and sunshine. Because they evolved in our region, they are highly resistant to diseases and pests. Go to the woods and you will see them everywhere!

Muscadines taste deliciously sweet with a sweet-sour skin. Set up a trellis to train the vine and enjoy irresistible backyard grapes at the end of summer! Every backyard needs a grapevine.

Pulling up some goodies from under the ground is our favorite early summer surprise!

Carrots are actually the roots (taproot) of the plant, whereas the fleshy bulbs of onions and garlic are modified leaves.

A good indicator to estimate the size of your underground vegetables is the number of leaves growing over ground. More vegetative leaves roughly correspond to more carbohydrates stored underneath, which mean bigger harvests: thicker carrots and juicier bulbs with more layers.

Checking up on how some backyard fruits are doing this season.

Grow your own fruits right at home. You don't need a big yard either - containers work too!
Warning: once you taste your homegrown fruits, it might ruin grocery store ones for you!
