Autumn chill? We have got your heating needs covered.

The first genuinely cold Atlanta morning usually arrives in the last week of October, and it arrives without warning. Every year it is followed by a day of calls from people whose heat did not come on.

Run yours for ten minutes this week. If it smells odd for more than a few minutes, cycles on and off, or does nothing at all, you have found it early - which is the whole point.

Are you paying to heat your crawlspace?

Leaky duct work shows up as a set of complaints people usually blame on the unit: one room that never warms up, weak airflow from certain vents, more dust than the house should make, and a bill that climbs while the weather stays the same.

The system is often fine. The air is just not arriving where you asked for it.

Options, not a single number.

Eric's job was a big one, and what he singles out is not the size of it - it is being given a couple of reasonably priced options first, and then having the whole thing done inside a day.

That is the difference between a quote and a decision. You should always get to choose.

Thank you, Eric. Indoor Experts - indoorexperts.com

How often should you actually change the filter?

Every one to three months is the honest answer, and where you land depends on the house rather than the box. Pets, a recent remodel, or a system that ran hard through a Georgia summer all push you to the short end.

The simplest test: hold it up to a light. If you cannot see light through it, it stopped being a filter a while ago and started being a restriction.

Save this for the next time you are standing in the hardware aisle.

A maintenance plan is mostly about the calendar.

Two scheduled visits a year means someone looks at your system in the spring before the first hot week and in the autumn before the first cold one - which is exactly when problems are cheap to fix and nobody is waiting in a 40-degree house.

It also means the technician has seen your equipment before, so the second visit starts from what he found on the first.

Five signs your ducts are due.

Visible debris in the vents. Musty or mouldy odours when the system starts. Weak airflow from a register that used to be fine. Dust that returns a day after you clean. Allergy symptoms that get worse indoors instead of better.

Georgia pollen season leaves a deposit that summer running only pushes deeper into the duct work. If two or more of these sound like your house, it is not the filter.

Fall Maintenance Special.

Atlanta gives you a real shoulder season - a few weeks where the AC is finally off and the heat has not been asked for yet. It is the only stretch of the year when a technician can take a system apart without anyone sitting in an uncomfortable house waiting.

That is why it is cheaper now, and why the appointment is easier to get.
