The rollers on your garage door serve similar purposes as the tires on your car, truck, or SUV. When they are new, they tend to be smooth and quiet and assist your garage door to raise and lower with minimal drag and noise. Over time and with normal use, rollers develop flat spots, collect dirt and debris, and sometimes get out of alignment. Without regular maintenance, your garage door system has to work harder and harder to keep up.
There are several types of rollers on the market today, but the most commonly used nowadays are the nylon type with sealed bearings inside of them. The exterior nylon is very quiet as it travels up and down the track. If you have (or ever had) metal rollers, you know the racket they can make. The internal bearings allow the rollers to operate smoothly with minimal friction. And the external seal helps to keep dirt and debris out of bearings. These modern-day rollers can last up to 100,000 cycles (a cycle is when the door is raised and lowered one time) with proper lubrication maintenance. To put this in perspective, garage door torsion springs are typically rated for a minimum of 10,000 cycles. However, to be fair to the torsion spring, it does most of the work and is truly the backbone of the entire system.
So take a quick look at your rollers. At a minimum, lubricate them if you haven’t done so in the past 12 months. If you choose to replace them, we would truly appreciate if you would consider us to do the work.
