Let’s talk about one of the biggest warning signs that the A/C serviceman may be trying to pull one over on you: he pressures you into agreeing to an expensive repair or even into replacing your equipment. While there are situations where replacement may be the most cost-effective option, you should never feel pressured, cajoled, bullied, or frightened into a decision that you might not be able to afford—or even actually need. A good service technician shouldn’t mind being watched while he works, and should be able to explain exactly what is wrong in terms anyone could understand. If the repairman suggests replacement, he should also encourage you to take as long as you need to get a second opinion or at least think about it, without acting disappointed, disapproving, or indignant.

You should also be wary of the guy who tells you he can give you a discount or do the job right away if you commit immediately but that if you take your time to decide, the price will go up or he might have to put you off for a month—in a heat wave. And if your serviceman claims that it would be “unsafe” to run your air conditioner, turn it off and call someone for a second opinion. These are all tactics we have heard about--multiple times--from clients.

All this may seem like common sense now, but when your A/C quits on a 102-degree day and a pushy serviceman is making you feel too dumb to say no, you may make a bad decision. Don't let anyone pressure you into making a hurried decision, no matter how hot the weather is!

We first posted a series of tips on spotting a dishonest repairman more than a decade ago after NBC’s Dateline aired an expose of cheating A/C service companies, but if anything it seems like the problem has only gotten worse.
Increasingly, the line between honesty and outright lying to a customer has become blurred by commissioned salesmen masquerading as “servicemen,” aggressively selling repairs, services, or even entire systems that are not necessarily in the customer’s best interests. These types of companies and their shady practices are an embarrassment to the industry.
Every summer we get calls from customers who need a second opinion after receiving a terminal diagnosis on their A/C equipment--only to find that there was little, if anything, wrong with it at all. How can you tell if you are being lied to? In the next few posts, we’ll talk about warning signs that your service man may not be completely honest, and ideas for choosing a service company.

Air conditioning season has suddenly arrived now that the days of "may" have passed (one day it "may" be sunny and the next day "may" come with an inch of hail).
Here's an air conditioning season, DIY maintenance tip:
Keep the area around the outside unit clean. Don’t allow leaves, grass, pet hair, blossoms or cotton from trees to pile against or in the coils. Never run the mower discharging at the unit. Even a nearly imperceptible coat of dust and oxidation on the fins of the coil will reduce the effectiveness of the unit—and cost you extra money to operate. Control ants, earwigs, spiders and wasps around the unit as they can cause electrical and other malfunctions.
If you want to try to clear debris from your outdoor unit yourself, FIRST turn the power off to the system at the electrical disconnect box.
NEVER remove the cover to the electrical or controls portion of the equipment, as you can still be injured even with the power off.
Do not use anything harsher than a sharp blast of water from the garden hose to clean the coils or you could cause serious damage to your equipment.

• Want to inexpensively upgrade to a more efficient heating and air system that costs less to run? Change your filter!
• Want to get more cooling capacity and comfort out of your system? Change your filter!
• Want a more reliable heating and air system with fewer breakdowns? Keep your filter clean!
• Want to get decades of use out of your expensive system? Keep your filter clean!

Sensing a pattern yet?

Keeping a clean filter in your system is easily the most important way to save money on energy and repairs while staying as comfortable as possible and extending the life of your equipment. If your system uses standard 1" thick filters (most residential systems do), plan on stocking up on inexpensive pleated filters (more expensive/higher filtration is NOT necessarily better, especially for an older system) and changing them MONTHLY...even if they claim to last "up to" 3 months.

If you hadn’t started your car for 6 months, you wouldn’t wait until the morning you needed to drive it on vacation…you would take it on a test run well in advance, right? Think of your air conditioning the same way: it probably has not been used since last fall, so don’t wait until a 95 degree day to try it out. Instead, choose a warm afternoon (75 degrees or above) for a test run.
Start with a clean filter (unless you have been faithful about changing your filter every month already). Make sure there is nothing stacked on or around the outdoor unit. Clear away any leaves or other organic matter that may have accumulated around the unit. If there are a lot of leaves or dirt down in the unit, consider either cleaning out the coil (there are directions further down on our page) or have us come out and perform a pre-season service for you.

At the thermostat, turn the system to “cool,” leaving the fan on “auto.” Turn the temperature setting down until the system turns on, allowing it to run for about ten minutes. Check that the air is coming out of each register, and that all registers are open. If you have a thermometer, check that the air coming out is at least 20 degrees cooler than the current temperature in the house. Go outside and listen to the unit, making sure that there are no unfamiliar noises coming from it (grinding, banging, or loud buzzing). If all is well, you will probably be ready for that first heat wave. If not, don’t wait! Now is the time to get on the schedule of your favorite service company.
