#473 - Fortuity

Teals, reds, purples, and golden yellows are swirled together in light filled coils. The colors spill and overflow showing overabundance. Do we keep this good fortune all to ourselves or do we pour it out onto others letting the steady stream flow out of us to others? Does the goodness we have spill out of our lives splashing onto others? What is our effect on the world? Is goodness really good if it’s kept in isolation, or can something only truly be good when that goodness is shared?

Life isn’t always what it seems. From the external we see the smiling faces, graceful treading, and bravery, but on the inside what is truly behind the scenes? I’ve noticed in my own life one of my biggest enemies lies within. The fears I listen to and believe – the fears I act as if they are true – the fears I ALLOW to govern my life. How long will I let them cage me? Which ones are caging you? Are their fears that govern their lives and actually have them feeling trapped? The fear of man and the fear of speaking up, the fear of perfection or falling short – never quite measuring up. Perhaps the fear of never being forgiven or truly loved. Everyone has a cage, we just see the yellow canary.

We only have one home – one spaceship through the universe. Do we prize it and hold it in high esteem? Do we realize the value it has and just how precious it is?

In this painting the Earth being on a pedestal symbolizes the respect I have for our world. How it is the pinnacle of creation. The rest of space may be void, vast, and dead – but there is a spec of blue and green amongst it teeming with life. Life is valuable and different. Where do the laws come from that hold our planet in space? Who hung the moon on a string? We get numb to it here on earth because we see it all around us, but if we had the lens to see earth from space, from a different point of view, we would see just how unique our round oasis is.

Must we live up to others’ expectations? How about our own? And what do we gain if we do live up to those expectations? What is the cost? Do we truly live? Or do we end up as something outwardly beautiful, but inwardly dead. Something from the outside stunning to behold but not alive within. A statue in a museum with a perfect appearance but never able to move one inch forward in real life. Merely a head on a pedestal.
But what would be more miraculous to behold? A beautiful statue, or one that came to life?
Are you brave enough to move? I dare you.

Title: Happiness

Total Abstraction

Joyous, light, and airy colors were used to exude happiness in this work. A sumi brush was used to paint in the dark places of life that steal our happiness. Happiness is not always attained and can be fleeting, but remember, joy is different than happiness; joy is an overall attitude and way of living. Joy can be found in a sad situation, whereas happiness is conditional and can easily be covered up and ruined by sadness and fickle emotions we experience in life.

Total Abstraction
Using a Japanese technique of sumi brush mixed with traditional oil and paintbrush work. It lends armature to the abstract idea. There is also a nod to tromp l'oil in the painting to test the theory of if things are always 'cut and dry'. The juxtaposition of hard and soft brush strokes, black and white, colorful and neutral - all of these being utilized in the same work. This painting begs the questions "What are the value of ethics? Do ethics give structure to our lives? How do unethical acts affect you, especially by those who have no scruples? Or is it Whatever you can do, you will do, as long as no one is watching? And how prevalent do you think that line of thought is?"
