Great info.

Raising the mower blade one notch changes what lives in the lawn.

At two inches, the soil surface heats fast and dries out. Not much survives between mowings. At three and a half inches, the grass shades its own roots, holds more moisture, and keeps a thin layer of leaf litter at the base.

That litter layer is where ground-nesting bees dig, firefly larvae develop, and foraging birds find insects.

🌿 What changes at 3.5 inches:

- Soil stays cooler and holds moisture longer between waterings
- Ground-level insects have cover — more food for robins, sparrows, and wrens
- The grass outcompetes weeds more effectively at taller height
- Less water, less fertilizer, fewer bare patches
